Neighborhood fireworks: annoying or patriotic fun?

fireworksSeveral of us here at The Eagle were remarking today that it seems like fireworks in many of our neighborhoods have been especially prominent this year. Are you experiencing the same thing?

Some of my favorite Fourth of July memories involve the neighbors all gathering together to share root beer floats and our collection of fireworks. There were a few years when multiple families on the block would pool their money and buy a stash together. But such firework celebrations also pose the risk of leaving a mess, keeping neighbors up at night, scaring pets, etc.

Do you embrace neighborhood fireworks, or are they bothersome nuisances?

Describe your perfect summer day for a chance to win two summer reads

“Picture Perfect” book coverYou might not have the time or money to take a summer vacation this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take one day to do only the things that you want to do.

Here’s how my perfect summer day would unfold: A morning swim at the gym (so I don’t feel lazy the rest of the day), breakfast on my back deck with French press coffee and homemade crepes (courtesy of my husband, no less), a couple of hours reading in my backyard hammock (I don’t even own one, but this is all theoretical, right?), a couple of hours quilting with my mom (it’s a hobby she and I love), a movie with my hubby during the hottest part of the afternoon and a dinner out with friends and family, during which I would order a bottle of wine and dessert.

“Save the Date” book coverNow it’s your turn. Post your description of your perfect summer day. If it includes indulging in chick lit, you’re in luck. Because we’ll randomly select a participant to win a paperback copy of these two books: “Picture Perfect” by Catherine Clark and “Save the Date” by Tamara Summers.

What’s your favorite part about summer?

woman with picnic basketSummer officially started June 21. Time for meals made with fresh herbs and produce, drive-in movies, picnics at the park and swimming outside.

Take our current WichiTalk poll, which asks, “What’s your favorite part about summer? (Not a fan? No worries: There’s an option for you to choose, too.)

And if your favorite part of summer isn’t reflected in the survey, please leave a comment here and tell us what you love about these lazy, hazy days.

What Wichita adventure do you want to have this summer?

child in swingNeighborhood parks. Locally owned restaurants. Museums and venues. Wichita has endless corners to discover.

What Wichita adventure have you always wanted to have but have never actually done? Tell us what’s on the top of your “staycation” to-do list this summer. We’ll randomly select one participant to win a $15 gift certificate to Connie’s Mexico Cafe, 2227 N. Broadway.

A little bit of background on the restaurant, from Eagle write Denise Neil: “Connie Lopez helped start this family-run Mexican cafe in the 1960s, eventually passing it to her only daughter, Carmen. Carmen’s five daughters also worked in the restaurant and help run it today.”

Are you packing pro? Share your tips

Woman with suitcaseWith additional fees for the more luggage and more things you bring on planes, it’s quickly becoming more expensive to fly — especially if you have a lot of stuff you’re bringing with you on work or vacation trips.

Wrinkle-resistant fabrics, reversible clothing and color coordinating everything you bring are a few ways to make the most of the space (and luggage weight) of your belongings. Pack your socks in your shoes. Don’t bring all of your shoes. Tie that bulky jacket you want to bring around your waist instead of smashing it into your suitcase. Stop by a drug store or grocery store when you arrive at your destination to pick up diapers, snacks and other things you’ll want and need during your trip.

Share your tips for packing light for travel, whether you’re en route for business or vacation.

What’s the best thing about living alone?

Live Alone and Like It coverIn 1936, Marjorie Hillis wrote “Live Alone and Like It,” a bestselling book dedicated to celebrating “bachelor ladies,” single women who live alone. Hillis, who worked for Vogue magazine for more than 20 years, died in 1971. But a new edition of her book has been released this month (5 Spot, $14).

The book addresses the importance of having a hobby that you can keep at home, entertaining at your home and more. The new edition features a preface by Laurie Graff, chick lit author of “You Have to Kiss a Lot of Frogs.”

We’d like to give away a copy to someone who answers this question: What do you like most about living alone? We’ll randomly select a participant at 5 p.m. June 10.

Thirty? What 30 things should you know or have done?

LoriAmong other pearls of wisdom, Thursday’s WichiTalk includes a story that lists 30 things every 30-year-old should know how to do or should have done.

Two that I’d add to my list that weren’t included in that story are:

  • Learn how to make something with your hands. In this society, where you can buy everything you need, it is a rare treat to look at a painting, a piece of furniture (or, in my case, a quilt) and say to yourself, “Wow. I did that.” (The quilt pictured is my most recent project.)
  • Work with a charity or non-profit that you believe in. It’s good for your soul. It helps you give back to your community. And, even if you’re not expecting it, the work teaches you more about yourself.

What would you add to your list of 30 things to know or do before you turn 30? Do you have a life to-do list? Maybe yours is 40 things to do before you turn 40 or nine experiences to embrace before ’09. Click on “comments” to share your goals.

What do you think about tattoos in the workplace?

woman with tattooDo you think tattoos that are clearly visible (on the hand or neck, for example) are appropriate in the workplace? Do you think employees should cover them up?

Or do you think that tattoos have become commonplace in society and should be so at work, as well? (One in four adults now has a tattoo, according to some estimates.)

Share your opinion — and, if possible, your personal experience.

Trade a tip for reusing your “trash” and win

“Rubbish” book cover“Rubbish! Reuse Your Refuse” by Kate Shoup is a new book out this spring dedicated to helping you turn your “garbage” into cute crafts. For example, the book offers photos and gives instructions on how to turn pieces of aluminum cans, credit cards, poker chips and wine corks into jewelry. Other projects that caught our eye: An iPod cover made from an old record album cover and a colorful clutch purse made from the webbing of a lawn chair.

In this era of green and inexpensive living, we want to know how you turn your trash into treasures. Do you use drink bottles to create decorative vases? Broken dishes to make colorful mosaic stepping stones for your garden?

Click on “comments” to share a tip. At 5 p.m. Tuesday, we’ll randomly select one participant to win a free copy of “Rubbish” (John Wiley & Sons, $19.99).

UPDATE: Congrats to coppercorn, who we randomly selected as the winner in our giveaway. Thanks to all who participated!
