Share your bridesmaid’s photo — good or bad

women in gown 1The “always a bridesmaid” pop culture phenomenon comes to the big screen in “27 Dresses” starring Katherine Heigl of “Grey’s Anatomy” fame. If you can’t wait until next week, when it opens nationally, check out the sneak preview at 2:25 p.m. Sunday at Warren Theatre (west).

In the meantime, check out Uglydress.com for a good laugh.

And dig out your bridesmaid’s photo archive. We’re collecting photos of local women in their favorite — or most hated — bridesmaid’s dress. If it’s a dress you detest and think we need to see to believe, send it in. If it’s a beautiful gown that you truly could wear to other non-wedding events again and again, we want to hear about it. Please e-mail a photo of you wearing the dress, a description of the dress and your name, hometown and daytime phone number to wichitalk@wichitaeagle.com.

We also want to know how many times you’ve been a bridesmaid.
Can you top Jane in “27 Dresses”? We’re curious to know which woman in Wichita has been a bridesmaid the most number of times.

I still want to fly

The "X-Men" (and women) are back for a last stand, which has me thinking about super powers.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to be able to fly. I’d use my power for good, not evil, of course.

How about you? What superpower have you always wanted?

Oscar observations

So it’s the morning after, and we’re all water cooling (like my new verb?) about what we liked and hated about last night’s Academy Awards. Here are a few of my random thoughts. Let me know if you agree or disagree.

LOVED IT:
1. Jon Stewart: I’ve heard a lot of people kvetching about Stewart’s job as host. People say he wasn’t as funny as he is on "The Daily Show." Maybe not, but I enjoyed him, found many of his jokes hilarious, and thought he hit just the right tone. The Oscar’s aren’t exactly a hilarious ceremony to start off with, are they? I say bring him back.

2. Pimpin’: Three 6 Mafia and their performance of the song "It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp" (and their subsequent win) added a touch of MTV-style playfulness and irreverence that the stuffy Oscar’s needed.

3. Reese Witherspoon: It’s hard not to envy Reece. She’s a great actress (Best Actress, actually) with a gorgeous husband, two cute kids, and the ability to quite successfully put forth the strong woman image she spoke of in her acceptance speech — which was the only speech I paid close attention to.

HATED IT:
1. Intrusive music: So now the orchestra is playing the "get off the stage" music DURING the acceptance speech? Very distracting?

2. Charlize Theron’s big ‘ol bow: I don’t normally get too worked up about Oscar fashion, but I haven’t seen a bow that big since Prom Night 1989.

3. "Crash:" Am I the only person on this planet who didn’t love that movie? I was not pleased that it won Best Picture for many reasons, including that it made me lose the Oscar prediction contest my friends and I had going at my house.

Your turn…

Wichita on the big screen

A movie crowd at the Warren Theatre in west Wichita applauded Friday night at the late showing of the quirky romantic comedy Elizabethtown produced by Tom Cruise.

Why, you ask? Because the flick features a split second in which Drew Baylor (Orlando Bloom) drives through Wichita during a long-overdue road trip with his father. How can you tell? No skyline or landmark shot, just a plain ol’ highway sign.

In the movie, Baylor’s love interest Claire Colburn (Kirsten Dunst) maps out the trek. You’d think the girl knew what she was doing. But then again, wouldn’t she have had Baylor stop in Wichita? He could have seen the original Pizza Hut, the museums along the river — heck, maybe even Ty Pennington.

Oh well. Perhaps in the sequel …
