Trade tips for a successful themed party

Today’s WichiTalk cover story shares recipes and tips for throwing a South Pacific soiree.

Have you thrown a successful themed party?

life saverLast year, my sister and I threw a cruise-themed wedding shower for our sister who was preparing for a destination “weddingmoon,” in which the bride and groom get married while on their honeymoon in a tropical locale.

Here are some of the details that our guests appreciated:

  • We created inexpensive but fun boarding pass-style invitations.
  • When guests arrived, we gave them a lei and snapped their photo with inflatable inner tubes. When they left, they received a pink luggage tag with a “thank you for traveling with us” message attached.
  • For gifts, we asked guests to purchase fun beach clothing (swimsuit cover-ups, flip-flops, etc.) for our sister. We asked her to bring an empty suitcase. She went home packed for the trip.
  • We played Hawaiian music and served fresh pineapple, cocktail shrimp and fruity cocktails with umbrellas, among other treats.

Where in town do you indulge your sweet tooth?

woman with chocolatesCheck out WichiTalk’s Thursday cover story for a look inside several Wichita candy stores.

We realize, though, that there are many other places in the Wichita area to get treats and desserts, including malts at Jimmie’s Diner, pies at Riverside Cafe and muffins at Copper Oven.

Got milk … and a shortcut cookie recipe?

cookie.jpgCookie confession: A few years ago, I finally embraced the baking shortcut that is prepared cookie dough. A co-worker and his family were moving, and I wanted to bake a batch of cookies to send them off. (My husband’s family has a made-from-scratch sugar cookie recipe that is to die for.) Bit I ran out of time and instead grabbed a package of ready-to-bake cookies from the grocery store. I baked them in 12 minutes, stacked them on a plate and handed them over, a bit ashamed of myself. But when the co-worker called later for the recipe (”My son loved them!”), I admitted what I’d done and convinced myself that, at times, home-baked cookies can be just as good as homemade cookies.

Check out Wednesday’s WichiTalk cover story to find sweet and savory recipes that use prepared dough. And, if you have a recipe for dressing up prepared dough, please share it here. Who knows: I might need a quick batch the next time a friend has something to celebrate.

How do you build a better burger?

hamburgerToday’s WichiTalk cover story featured recipes for award-winning hamburgers. Now we want to know your recipe for a delicious summer burger.

I love to grill buffalo burgers using ground buffalo meat (you can find it at most grocery stores now). Dice a few strips of uncooked bacon and include the bacon bits in your patties. When you grill your burgers, the bacon will help keep them nice and juicy and add savory flavor. Top with provolone cheese, mushrooms and avocado slices. Mmm. Pass the lemonade!

Battle of the sexes at the kitchen table

woman with appleHe prefers a big juicy steak. She’s happy with her baby spinach salad. Sound like you and your significant other?

An AFP article points to a study that indicates that men and women like different foods, “with men favoring meat and poultry, and women fruits and vegetables.”

I’m by no means a vegetarian, but my husband has me beat in the carnivore category. Here’s my question, though: Does this truly reflect tastes? Or do women tend to be more health-conscious and aware of their intakes of calories, natural vitamins and cancer-fighting produce?

What are you drinking?

Sam Adams LightLight beer is the No. 1-selling style of beer across the nation, according to a Washington Post story that you can find in Thursday’s WichiTalk.

My favorite beer is Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, which www.samueladams.com accurately describes as having “distinct cherry tartness with a touch of sweet honey, cereal notes with a clean, fruity finish.” (I especially like it on tap and have found it offered that way in bars in Boston, Atlanta and — long story — Council Bluffs, Iowa.) According to the brewer, a 12-ounce bottle has 180 calories.

I do like Sam Adams Light, which has 119 calories. But if I’m I’m going to cut calories at dinner, I’d skip the fries or potato chips, opt for a spinach salad and stick with my favorite brew (even with 61 extra calories).

Do you have a favorite light beer? How important is a beer’s calorie count to you?

What do you love about the Super Bowl?

footballDo you have a Super Bowl tradition or another reason why you love one of the biggest football days of the year? What are your plans for Sunday?

My husband and I will get together with our friends and tease fans of teams who didn’t make it to the Super Bowl, laugh at the sure-to-be-hilarious commercials and enjoy each other’s cooking. (If you need a tasty recipe to try, check out this story that ran in Monday’s WichiTalk about a local woman who throws a big Super Bowl party every year.)
