How do you handle kids’ bedtimes in the summer?

What are the bedtime rules in your house during the summer? Do your kids stay up later? As late as they want? Or do organized sports, day camps and other scheduled events mean that bedtimes are observed as strictly as when school’s in session?

My kids are all grown and gone from home now, but when they were at home, I kept them busy with sports. I didn’t really need to set a bedtime in the summer, because they were tired enough that they were ready to go to bed when they should, which was 8 or 9, when I went to bed. I go to work early so I go to bed early and so did my kids. It wasn’t an option to sleep all day.

We don’t have a set bedtime in the summer, even though we’re usually in bed by ten. But on some nights, the call of the drive-in movie theater supercedes the need for sleep. Sometimes we’ll be driving home when the dark is just beginning to win it’s battle with the daylight, and see the Old Town interactive fountains, and stay up way too late again! I must say, though, that sometimes things just like this happen during the school year, too, and it doesn’t bother us very much. God’s world is a glorious place, and we have such a short time to enjoy it, so we don’t let something as mundane as bedtime get in our way!
