With additional fees for the more luggage and more things you bring on planes, it’s quickly becoming more expensive to fly — especially if you have a lot of stuff you’re bringing with you on work or vacation trips.
Wrinkle-resistant fabrics, reversible clothing and color coordinating everything you bring are a few ways to make the most of the space (and luggage weight) of your belongings. Pack your socks in your shoes. Don’t bring all of your shoes. Tie that bulky jacket you want to bring around your waist instead of smashing it into your suitcase. Stop by a drug store or grocery store when you arrive at your destination to pick up diapers, snacks and other things you’ll want and need during your trip.
Share your tips for packing light for travel, whether you’re en route for business or vacation.

Rolling your clothing items, as opposed to folding them, saves room.
Buy the little “traveler” or sample toiletries, don’t bring a 32 oz bottle of shampoo. Two sets of underwear, plus what you have on. Learn to hand-wash in the sink, and dry with a hair dryer. Hoodies and sweats serve not only as outerwear in cool weather, but as sleepwear, too. Shoes take a lot of weight and space, so coordinate your outfits to only need one pair besides what you travel in. Wear a reversible brown/black belt. Forget travel irons and hair dryers, they are available in the hotel. Salespeople, ship your stuff ahead, or have your documents printed there. Use their projector or rent one. Load your tunes and movies on your laptop, don’t carry CD’s or DVD’s. Minimize jewelry. Strip your wallet of non-essentials, but have enough money and credit cards. In colder weather, a scarf, stocking cap and gloves can make a mid-weight jacket bearable. That textbook you want to study on the trip? Forget it! Copy 2 or 3 chapters, you’ll be lucky if you get that much done.
The store Backwoods is my secret. Two of us recently went to China for 15 days in one carry on! Their products make it possible to travel light but prepared.
It’s nice to have everything you need in one bag…and to know it’s not going to get lost. Of course we came back with 2 extra suitcases, but we didn’t mind paying to get our goodies home. So we didn’t have to haul stuff our whole trip, we also mailed some large parcels home.
I try to pack only the things that I plan on wearing. I fold everything very tight and make out check list of what things to bring that way I will not over or under pack my luggage. This always work out fine for me.
