Did you — or will you — have a ranch wedding?

bride and groom, outdoorsJenna Bush’s marriage to Henry Hager earlier this month on a Texas ranch shows that ranch or rural weddings can be rustic — but still elegant. Check out WichiTalk on Monday for a few tips for rustic receptions, from WeddingChannel.com.

In college, I was the guest at an outdoor wedding in a rural area not far from Kansas City. The landscape (home of the brides’ parents), with large, shady trees, was gorgeous. But, unfortunately, the weather turned bitterly cold and rainy. The bridal party’s makeup smeared. The flower girl got muddy. But that outdoor reception was a celebration, indeed. Everyone kicked off their shoes and danced on the portable floor underneath a big, white tent. The rain somehow made the night more magical. Everyone was laughing.

Were you married on a ranch or are you planning a rural wedding ceremony?

My youngest daughter decided she wanted an outdoor wedding on a friend’s farm. If you can imagine an outside wedding in the middle of August in Kansas.
We had that wedding last August and it turned out to be the most beautiful evening in Kansas. We had a little rain shower right before the ceremony, but it was enough to cool it off and we had just enough breeze there was no bugs. The farm was lush green and her colors were burnt orange and sage. The guys didn’t wear tuxes. They wore slacks and linen camp shirt. The photographer captured the bride and groom walking into the sunset with a rainbow. We used short canning jars with candles on the tables, and used a stock tank to keep the can pop, bottled water and beer cold. It was a great time. It seemed like you were in a fairy land once you crossed the gate of the farm.
