The Wichita River Festival kicks of Friday with an opening concert featuring pop singer Colbie Caillat. Throughout the years, I’ve made some very cool Riverfest memories. Among them: holding hands and strolling downtown with my high school boyfriend (who later became my husband), running in the River Run with my dad and treating my younger sisters to carnival rides during a weekend break home from college. I’ve also witnessed others’ memorable moments, including a marriage proposal. (She said yes!)
What’s your most exciting Riverfest memory? Maybe it was dancing onstage at an open-air concert, tasting your first ear of roasted corn or sailing down the Arkansas in your very own bathtub.

In 1988, my husband of almost 20 years picked me up late on our way to the final fireworks show at the River Festival. I remember being upset with him for being late and worried that we would not find a good seat on the bank to watch the show. Later on he explained that there was a reason why he was late. When he pulled out the ring and proposed to me in front of everyone, I started to cry. He said he was out all afternoon trying to find the perfect ring and he was sorry he didn’t pick me up on time. I felt so bad for being upset at him and also so very happy. It was obviously my best River Festival moment ever.

Back in the mid 1980’s I was on a bathtub team for the Civitan Club. My sailing days of having the wind to sometimes ease, convinced me to stash a couple of paddles in the bath tub in case the bike chain broke. Sure enough it did and we were able to paddle our craft to a second place finish. Many people on the crowded river banks realized we were paddling instead of peddaling and cheered us on to the finish. After returning to my friends area a reporter even came up to get the story.

I was 12 yrs old when the first River Festival took place. Growing up in Riverside, my friends and I were aware of everything happening in our area. We looked forward to concerts at the bandstand and boat races on the river, but were very excited when so many things were put together at once. We packed a picnic, rode our bikes and really had fun!
In 2003, my daughter, Tiffani, and I went by the food court with only $10. I told her I would get her a funnel cake as we listened to music by a local band. She was 9, and I had just recently adopted her. I took a chance and bought a Powerball scratch ticket. I won another free ticket and the workers said I won a free t-shirt too for spending a total of $10 dollars. The second ticket was a loser…I thought. The sweet lady told me not to throw away the ticket, but enter it in the second chance drawing to win a trip to be on the Powerball show at the time, located in Vegas (Where my daughter’s mother and I were married). I filled it out and forgot about it. In July, a woman named Mary called and said she was from the Kansas State Lottery. She said I won a trip to Vegas for 2 with my second chance drawing ticket! I’ll never forget that Riverfest for many fond memories. My daughter and I go back each year and eat funnel cakes.
We have attended the river festival since it began years ago. This year my 14 year-old grandson came in 3rd in the 10K River Run. As we were “soaking in” all the runner’s enthusiasm, we met Mr. Wycik, Opera Symphony Conducter of Germany who will be conducting The Pirates of Penzance. He had just finished the run and asked me to take his picture and send it via email. Since we already had a ticket for this opera, were thrilled to make this connection!
Making daily trips to riverfest is a family event. Being on 2nd shift gives me the chance to be here in the day time and explore! Our purpose of being here every day is for the contests!! Last year my wife and I won 1000 dollars at the art gallery contest. So now it’s a family affair to win and we do it with pride.
My most exciting River Festival memories are a tie between two - the first is the Medallion Hunt - it was always fun. Occasionally, we were even close to it without realizing it. I have a vague memory that we even searched for it in the middle of the night. (This was way before our kids came along.)
My second most exciting memory is the
WICHITA EAGLE NEWSPAPER AIRPLANE CONTEST.
It was FUN FUN FUN! We asked relatives and friends for their copies of the newspapers/entries plus we bought a ton of extra newspapers ourselves so that we would have plenty of entry forms (paper airplanes).
How it worked: Entrants stood on the balcony of Century II and attempted to throw their paper airplanes through the sunroof of a car.
There were plastic blow up baby swimming pools around the car - if you flew your airplane into one of the pools, you won a different prize.
There were lots of prizes offered, everything from t-shirts (which we still have one from 1990 - it’s hot pink) to newsprint pattern umbrellas to all kinds of other merchandise.
My husband is an aircraft engineer and one year, he made the finals. His photo was in a suburban edition of THE WICHITA EAGLE that year.
I believe the last year it was held was 1990 because we had our second daughter that year and it was another Mother’s Day I spent down at the Paper Airplane Contest.
That baby daughter is graduating from high school this weekend.
This year, 2008, was my first year running the 10K. I’d trained for over 2 months in preperation for the event. Before the race, I found my friend Ross. Without him it would have been extremely hard to get the time I got, which was 53:55. Ross, who has longer legs than me, finished with a time of 53:54, and got 3rd place in the male, under 12 division. During the time that I was training, I was usually doing 10 minute miles. I feel really proud of what I’ve done since it was my first time doing the 10K. I’d also like to congratulate my friend Ross on doing so well also. Great Job Ross!

Riverfest 2001 was the best for me. I had decided to run the 10k with my Dad who had been running this event every year for 20 years except 1 when he had by-pass surgery. This was my first time, and I thought I wouldn’t have too tough a time completing it. I had lost 35 lbs, been training for 4 months, yea - I had it all figured out. HA! I finished the race - dead last, but I did finish. Dad had finished long before me, came back to find me and then ran and finished again with me! Of course he told me, “don’t feel too bad honey, the 90-yr. old only beat you by 15 minutes! Later Dad called me to see how was doing and I explained that I would barely move! He told me he felt pretty good and had just finished mowing the yard. That year - I was 47 and Dad was 80! But it was great sharing that experience with him. Something I’ll never forget.
my favorite memory from the riverfest is when I was 18, so in ‘04.. I went with a group of friends, some who had just returned home from Iraq, we walked around it and enjoyed the activities all day long and we sooo tired by the time the sun went down we almost fell asleep during the fireworks and then when we all got back to the hotel rooms, we all realized we looked like lobsters from being so sunburnt.. The whole time we walked around, we just laughed and messed with one another and just were kids again..
