Wanted: Your ‘momisms’

“Momisms” book coverThe new book “Momisms” by Cathy Hamilton (Andrews McMeel, $5.99) celebrates things moms say, which the book showcases in “Parent-to-English” translations. The book defines “momisms” as “idiomatic sayings Mom uses to cajole, shame, motivate, inspire, threaten and — most of the time — bewilder her offspring.”

We want to know about your mom’s “momisms” for an upcoming WichiTalk story. What did your mother always say to invigorate, comfort or scold you, always with your best interest in mind? Did she have a unique phrase that captured her philosophy of life? A wisecrack she’d spout off that always made you laugh — at yourself?

At 5 p.m. on April 29th, we’ll randomly select three participants to win a free copy of the book “Momisms.”

My favorite from my mom is, “Don’t tip for bad service” which translates to don’t let yourself be treated badly or taken adavanatge of-you are worth too much. She applies this to all kinds of situations: romantic relationships, “mean girls” in high school, “mean moms” in elementary school PTAs, bad bosses, toxic friendships and yes even bad service at a resturant. It gave my sister & I the ability to feel like we could do something to change a bad situation.

    “Go cut me a switch.”

Also an explanation why we had the best pruned trees in the neighborhood.

A line I used with my youngest child to keep myself from totally being embarassed by my childs misbehavior in public was “you wait until your mom finds out what you have done.” It worked, until my son yelled out in a restuarant, “you are my mom!”

“Boys are boys until they’re buried.”

It was true in my pre-teen years, and it’s true now. Ask my husband.

I can’t even begin to guess how many times my mom said this…
“Nowhere is it written that life is fair!”
