Cloth vs. disposable: What’s your diaper philosophy?

diapered babyThe debate between cloth and disposable diapers is by no means a new one. But with increased awareness about green living, new developments in cloth diapers and rising prices of disposable diapers, some parents are revisiting the issue.

Which do you prefer? Or do you use both to cut down on waste while taking advantage of convenience?

Let’s trade travel tips

women suitcaseStudents are counting down the number of days until summer vacation starts, and I’ve been hearing others talking about their plans for summer getaways. When you travel, do you have a tip or trick you always employ to make your vacation stress-free? Here are a few things that I do.

  • After you’ve figured out a way to cram everything on your packing list into your suitcases, slip that list into your carry-on bag. That way if you lose your luggage and need to claim your missing items, you don’t have to rack your brain to remember everything that you brought.
  • Before you leave home, program the phone number of your hotel and a local taxi service into your cell phone. If you need it, help will only be a second away.
  • Clean your home before you leave. It’s a bit of a headache to deal with as you’re anxiously awaiting your trip, but you will be so pleased when you arrive home to find things sparkling clean.

Now it’s your turn to tell me about your ideas!

Saturday morning: To sleep in or not to sleep in?

woman sleepingWhen you conjure up thoughts of your ideal Saturday morning, which scenario most fits your image?

Option 1: It’s only 10:30 a.m. and you’ve already put in your five-mile run, stopped by the farmer’s market to buy a week’s worth of produce and called your mom to catch up. You’ll have time to run a few errands and grab that coveted mocha latte before meeting your girlfriends for lunch.

Option 2: It’s 10:30 a.m. and the sun is streaming into your bedroom. You’ve just slept for a peaceful, restful nine hours and plan to continue your laid-back morning in your p.j.s with a bowl of fruit and the current novel you’re reading. And you’re not answering the phone until noon.

Some of my favorite Saturdays have fit one extreme or the other. To me, the wonderful thing about Saturdays is that they can go either way. But if I have too many lazy ones, I feel as if I’m not taking full advantage of my weekends. If I have too many totally productive Saturdays, I feel as if I should kick back a bit.

Wanted: Your ‘momisms’

“Momisms” book coverThe new book “Momisms” by Cathy Hamilton (Andrews McMeel, $5.99) celebrates things moms say, which the book showcases in “Parent-to-English” translations. The book defines “momisms” as “idiomatic sayings Mom uses to cajole, shame, motivate, inspire, threaten and — most of the time — bewilder her offspring.”

We want to know about your mom’s “momisms” for an upcoming WichiTalk story. What did your mother always say to invigorate, comfort or scold you, always with your best interest in mind? Did she have a unique phrase that captured her philosophy of life? A wisecrack she’d spout off that always made you laugh — at yourself?

At 5 p.m. on April 29th, we’ll randomly select three participants to win a free copy of the book “Momisms.”

How do you make your long-distance relationship work?

couple, computerWe’ve all heard about long-distance relationships. Many of us, myself included, have been in them. But now long-distance marriages are reportedly on the rise. I can speak from experience when I say that any kind of serious long-distance relationship is not easy, even with the help of e-mails, cell phones and the Internet.
Do you live miles away from your significant other or spouse? Tell us about how you make your long-distance relationship work. How do you keep him or her apprised of the big and little things that you experience day-to-day? How do you keep worry, jealousy and loneliness in check? Has your relationship survived a stint of being separated (geographically speaking) from your sweetie?

Do you let your dog watch TV?

happy dogResearch showing music’s calming effect on dogs is sparking pet-friendly CDs and radio, according to a Columbia News Service story in today’s WichiTalk.

When I’m preoccupied or running an errand, I’ll leave the TV on Animal Planet for my two golden retrievers. I’m sure they really don’t “watch” the TV, but I know the animal sounds or occasional dog barks from the TV get their ears to perk up and their tails to wag. My dogs also have been amused by the CD “Songs to Make Dogs Happy” by the Laurel Canyon Animal Company. I picked it up at a book sale for $1 on a whim, and got a kick out of watching my pups react to a couple of the songs.

Do you leave the TV on for your dog? Or do you use other media or sounds to soothe your anxious hounds?
