It’s not difficult to find a friend online. Adding a friend in Facebook takes just a click.
But here’s the real question: Have you found a platonic pal on the Internet who now is a close friend who you spend time with — in person?
With the help of the Internet, I’ve certainly grown friendships. When you regularly read people’s blogs, twitters, Web sites and other digital life reports, it’s hard not to. But I can honestly say that I’ve never made a friend online that I didn’t already have.

I met my best friend Robin online about a year ago. We would chat for online every evening, finally we decided to meet for dinner and we have been joined at the hip ever since. It turned out she lives just minutes from me so we are together nearly every day. Sometimes we just get together to play cards and gossip, other times it’s dinner with our families and friday afternoons have become dedicated as our girl’s day out with lunch and either painting pottery, making jewelry or shopping, we even went to Kansas City together over Thanksgiving. She is the first person I turn to for advice, an outlet or just to share good news with.
I’ve found several great friends through a local website. Due to our jobs, we move every few years, and it’s hard to make friends. Since we’ve decided to stay here permanently, I’ve been able to find quite a few people online that I hang out with in real life. It’s been a lifesaver!
Over 10 years ago there was a large online group that met every weekend here in Wichita. Some were even from surrounding communities. Many of us still maintain those friendships today. I can count several of them as close friends that I see regularly.
