What’s your favorite book?

love-in-the-time-of-cholera.jpgMonday is Read Across America Day. The event celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss, so many people will be reading “The Cat in the Hat.” But considering the motivation of the day is to promote reading, I want to know about your favorite book.

Here are a few of mine:

  • “Love in the Time of Cholera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
  • “Marley and Me” by John Grogan
  • “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte
  • “Atonement” by Ian McEwan
  • “Gossamer” and “The Giver” by Lois Lowry
  • “Through Painted Deserts” by Donald Miller
  • “Love, Greg & Lauren” by Greg Manning

What are you drinking?

Sam Adams LightLight beer is the No. 1-selling style of beer across the nation, according to a Washington Post story that you can find in Thursday’s WichiTalk.

My favorite beer is Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, which www.samueladams.com accurately describes as having “distinct cherry tartness with a touch of sweet honey, cereal notes with a clean, fruity finish.” (I especially like it on tap and have found it offered that way in bars in Boston, Atlanta and — long story — Council Bluffs, Iowa.) According to the brewer, a 12-ounce bottle has 180 calories.

I do like Sam Adams Light, which has 119 calories. But if I’m I’m going to cut calories at dinner, I’d skip the fries or potato chips, opt for a spinach salad and stick with my favorite brew (even with 61 extra calories).

Do you have a favorite light beer? How important is a beer’s calorie count to you?

Rockin’ Wichita concerts

concertI’ve heard people buzzing throughout the day about the upcoming Sheryl Crow concert on April 22 at Century II. While I can’t stop humming her “Soak up the Sun” song, I’ve decided that I’m not a big enough fan of hers to spring for $50 or $70 tickets to see her concert. (I am, however, considering seeing cute crooner Michael Buble when he comes to Kansas City next month. I’m still kicking myself for not seeing him when he performed in Wichita in July 2006. Doh!)

My musings bring me to this question: What has been the best local concert you’ve ever seen?

I loved the Creed concert several years ago at the Coliseum. But (and I can’t believe I’m typing this) I’d have to say the Garth Brook concert in the late ’90s is probably my favorite Wichita-area concert I’ve been to. If you were there, too, you know that Garth is an amazing performer. (That’s saying a lot considering I barely listen to country anymore.)

Name that baby

pregnant womanThanks to technology, parents can turn to blogs and Web sites (including the Yahoo! Baby Names Answers site) to seek help from others (often strangers) when it comes to naming their babies.

How did you decide what to name your baby? Did you seek advice online? Have a survey on your blog? Randomly choose from a baby name book? Did you wait to meet your child before selecting a name?

Searching for Leap Day babies

two woman at a birthdayLeap Day graces our calendars this year, giving people who were born on Feb. 29 an opportunity to celebrate.

Were you born on Feb. 29, or does Leap Day hold another special meaning for you? Perhaps you were married on that date or maybe you host a hoppin’ Leap Day party every year you get the chance?

For an upcoming WichiTalk story, we’d like to hear why you love Leap Day and why Feb. 29 is special to you. Click on “comments” at left to tell us about your plans. (Please provide your e-mail address so we can contact you for our story!)

How do you save money on diapers?

Time to consign

dress.jpgConsignment sales are a gem for parents who want to save money by purchasing gently used children’s clothing, toys, furniture and more. They also offer families a chance to make money off children’s items they no longer need.

Check out our list of upcoming sales, which was in today’s WichiTalk.

Do you know of a local consignment sale that you’re planning to attend? Tell us about it.

Another mompreneur resource

ParentPreneur book coverA publicist e-mailed me today to tell me about another resource for mothers who draw on their experiences of parenthood to create their own businesses. (Check out a story on that movement that was in WichiTalk today.)

The book is “The ParentPreneur Edge: What Parenting Teaches about Building a Successful Business” (John Wiley & Sons, $24.95). You can read about it at www.parentpreneuredge.com.

Do you know of other helpful resources? Do you consider yourself a mompreneur?

Coughing my way back to Kansas

Today is Bonnie’s final blog posting from the Big Apple:

airplane windowThursday: Final day of Fashion Week for me had me running down the street this morning to the Vera Wang show so I could sit and wait 30 minutes for the show to start. The next show was Rebecca Taylor. After seeing Vera Wang, that was a completely different look.

Being in the middle of a thousand people this week, at least one germ got a hold of me, and so I’m coughing my way home to Kansas.

Make sure you check out my story about what I saw during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Wednesday’s WichiTalk. To whet your appetite, I’ll tell you about the celebs I saw during my trip in my Remnants column in Monday’s WichiTalk.)

Spotting a smile on a New York runway

Fashion Week in New York can be full of surprises. Take, for instance, Bonnie’s experience today:

smileWednesday: Every — yes every — fashion show starts late, so there’s plenty of time to people-watch and to think. This morning when we got into the venue for the Nanette LePore show, it dawned on me how much work and expense the designers go to for a 15- to 20-minute show.

Some leave the tent area plain, but others go all-out. The Nanette LePore show started, and beautiful fabric-like balloons that were hanging over the runway inflated. Some were shaped like stars. At the Michael Kors show, the backdrop was an enormous real-time photo of the bank of photographers at the end of the runway. I doubt that either of those special effects came cheap.

Now that the models walk down the runway looking half asleep, angry, hungry and bored out of their minds, the entertainment level has been cut way back. Bob Mackie used to do incredible shows where he tied a theme to his collection. Many times he had dancers in the show. Several fashion writers who have been coming here for years were talking about how they miss the days when models modeled.

I did see a model smile today. It was a pleasant surprise. She had teeth and everything. Maybe others could try it. It wouldn’t be necessary to go down the runway grinning, but it would be nice to see a pleasant look on their faces.

Three words for several models I’ve seen today: Go eat something. When your hip bones stick out more than your breasts, you’re too thin to win.

Chatting with a young man and woman before the Michael Kors show proved interesting when I told them that Racquel Welch was going to be at the show. “Who is that?” the young man asked. “Oh, I know. It’s that very beautiful actress from Italy,” the young woman said.

No, honey, that’s Sophia Loren. Then she said, “Oh yeah, she’s older, but still looks good.”

Boy, that’s the truth. She does look good, and I saw her close up. Not a wrinkle. Must have good genes.
