Share your Santa tales

Christmas Eve is less than a month away. How do you get ready for Santa’s visit at your house?

When we were kids, my sisters and I left a plate of homemade cookies for Santa. But we also tossed a carrot outside for Rudolph. On Christmas morning, someone (usually Dad) would retrieve the carrot from the ground. We’d eagerly inspect the teeth marks on it, evidence that the reindeer had munched on it a bit while Santa unloaded his loot under our tree. (It’s a bit gross, I’ll admit, looking back on the chewed-up-carrot tradition as an adult with a full knowledge of Christmas Eve mysteries revealed.)

Do you have a certain kind of cookie — or a special plate for the cookies — that you leave out for Santa to find? Maybe you reminisce about your own special Santa visits, because he always left sooty footprints behind or because his reindeer left hoofprints in your yard. Or maybe your preparations include singing certain songs or reading special stories.

Are you for or against holiday e-cards?

Do you think digital greeting cards are cold, impersonal and feel like a cheap shortcut? Or do you prefer to skip outdated snail mail and think e-cards are a sign of the times — and that it’s the thought and message of a holiday greeting that counts?

What do you do with Christmas cards you’ve received during holidays past?

I love to keep my cards that friends and family have sent me over the years. I frame the prettiest ones and display them in my home during the holidays. It’s an inexpensive decoration because I use frames I already own.

And while, for the holidays, I prefer a hand-written message (even just a brief greeting) to an e-mail or e-card, I really just appreciate my friends touching base with me around Christmas.

Watch for that return address!

If you’re headed out to see the movie "Fred Claus" starring Paul Giamatti (as Santa) and Vince Vaughn (as St. Nick’s no-good older brother), keep your eyes open. Near the beginning of the movie, Santa’s explaining to Fred just how things work at the North Pole. The Christmas tour of sorts includes an image of a cute little girl writing her Christmas letter to Santa. For just a second or two, there’s a glimpse of her envelope addressed to Santa. In the return address, you’ll notice something familiar: Wichita.

I saw the movie on Thanksgiving Day but couldn’t make out the rest of the address. If you did, let me know. I’m curious what it said.

Happy Thanksgiving!

When you count your blessings today, what makes the top of your list? Click on “comments” below to tell us what you’re thankful for.

Today, WichiTalk contributors are thankful for …

  • Fashion writer Bonnie Bing: a job for which I get to write about things I like: people, places and fashion.
  • WichiTalk editor Lori O’Toole Buselt: my crazy pets, cozy quilts, my new love of swimming and a family who loves me.
  • Writer Icess Fernandez: good friends and good times, both of which make me smile when life gets tough. My health and that of my family because not everyone is blessed with good or even decent health. My co-workers who keep me laughing and on my toes and who have gotten just about every joke I’ve cracked. My sister, who has showed me that perseverance comes in many forms, you just have to be patient. My CD player on my desk, which has heard some new and amazing music this year, both from local and national talent.
  • Health writer Karen Shideler: that Thanksgiving is a holiday that’s only about gathering — and that my extended family will be able to gather around the table with us this year. I’m thankful that my nephew’s fiancee will be with us for the first time. I’m thankful for pumpkin cobbler and cherry and apple pie — and not having to feel guilty about enjoying them on Thanksgiving, even if I do write about health!
  • Features intern Megan Sterrett: my college career is coming to a close, I’ll be staying warm with some new fashion accessories, and my favorite sports teams are rocking. Can life get any better? Most importantly, I’m thankful for my family. Between work, classes and social lives, we don’t see each other often enough. I am looking forward to kicking back, relaxing and spending some time with them.
  • Writer and columnist Suzanne Perez Tobias: my husband and kiddos, dedicated teachers, “Nutcracker” music, comfy shoes, good merlot and the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. :-)

Pie pointers and more

In Monday’s WichiTalk cover story, writer Denise Neil shares reader and expert tips for making The Perfect Thanksgiving Turkey.

But, at least in my eyes, Tom shouldn’t be the center of the show. I can’t wait to eat sweet potatoes and my mom’s famous homemade pecan pie.

Do you have tips for preparing Thanksgiving appetizers, side dishes or desserts?

Click on "comments" below and share your tips and recipes. I’m sure someone will be thankful that you did.

Where to find Pile It

On Sept. 25th, we ran a Smalltalk in WichiTalk about the new card game Pile it, which "puts visual acuity to the test by
having players sort their dealt cards by color, number or picture."

One reader named Carolyn was intrigued and decided to buy the game to give as stocking stuffers this holiday season. However, she wasn’t able to find them in local stores and called me today looking for help. After checking with Funstreet Games, the game’s maker, I found that the game is available locally at Imagine That Toys, 2939 N. Rock Road Suite 170. Thanks, Carolyn, for the good question!

Tell us about your cultural holiday tradition

Do you have a cultural tradition that’s rich in history?

Perhaps your family has heirloom candle holders you use to light the seven candles of Kwanzaa. Or do you covet a centuries-old family recipe for homemade rolls you enjoy each Dec. 13 when you celebrate St. Lucia Day? Maybe you hang a special Star of David from Israel to mark Hanukkah.

We want to know about your cultural holiday traditions for a future WichiTalk story. Please post your comments here or contact Icess Fernandez at ifernandez@wichitaeagle.com, and include your name and a daytime phone number.

Tell us about your blog

WichiTalk is on the hunt for local bloggers.

Are you a Wichita-area resident who documents your love of — or constant struggle with — shopping, cooking and enjoying food? Do you document raising your kids, searching for fashion bargain buys or pursuing your scrapbooking hobby in your own little corner of the Blogosphere?

How do you protect playtime?

Free time to play may be in jeopardy, according to some parents and experts. With technology, parents and scheduled activities involved in kids’ lives, many children have less time for dressing up and letting the imagination run free.

Do you keep a couple of evenings free in your household to spend time with your family without lessons, meetings or other activities? Do your children have time to “just go play”?
