Are you a Mrs. Mom?

For most working mothers, balancing work and home obligations is no easy feat. Did you decide to take a break from your career to tend to your children, household, etc.?

What went into your decision? How did you decide whether it was a move your family could afford? Tell your story by clicking on "comments" below.

How do you carve it up?

Do you have any tips for carving jack-o’-lanterns? Do you use an atypical tool (like a small gardening trowel) to scoop seeds? Do you have fun ideas for how to decorate your pumpkin?

Here’s one idea for Halloween evening: Carve your address or house number into a series of pumpkins and set them on your porch or on your front steps as a fun way to welcome costumed kids or party guests.

Star designer

After a search all over one floor of Fashion Center Dallas at the World Trade Center, I found the right showroom and had a very interesting interview with a designer on the move. If you watch “Project Runway,” you may remember Malan Breton, a charming young man with an Aussie accent and coal black hair. He was one of the contestants on the third season. He is a soft-spoken, but enthusiastic. A talented designer, but still learning. Read more about Malan in an upcoming column in WichiTalk.

Spring chic

Here’s a hint if you’re cleaning out your closet: Don’t toss anything that’s yellow. I’m at the Dallas Apparel Market, and after attending a seminar with Gregor Simmons, who has a New York buying office, I’m convinced that yellow will be the hot, hot color for Spring 2008. She showed examples from at least a dozen collections, and three of them included a yellow trench coat. Turquoise is another important color for spring.

Fashion takes center stage in Dallas

The Eagle’s Bonnie Bing headed to Texas to check out the Dallas Apparel Spring Market, which will showcase trends and fashions for the spring. She’ll be writing a fashion report to run in WichiTalk next week, but in the meantime, keep your eye on our blog for updates from her:

Even though the market wasn’t supposed to officially open until Sunday, the World Trade Center started buzzing on Saturday. That was especially the case on the eighth floor, where actor Martin Sheen (who played President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet on “The West Wing”) was meeting and greeting retailers, market reps and buyers. I had a 30-minute interview with him. It was a blast. He’s shorter than I thought, but what a nice man.

You wonder why he was there? Read my column on Monday to find out.

I’ll give you a hint: Little fashions.

Costume call

What are you going to be for Halloween? Did you purchase a trendy costume at a local shop? Piece together a great costume from items you found at the local thrift shop?

I’ve been invited to a Halloween Masquerade, where everything will be "brought to you by the letter M" a la Sesame Street. Guests have been requested to dress up as someone or something that starts with the letter M.

I like my co-worker Suzanne’s easy and inexpensive homemade skunk costume idea from her WichiTalk cover story today: "Wear black sweats. Attach a white feather boa down the back as a stripe." Methinks I could claim myself to be a “malodorous mammal.”

Share your “babyproofing” tips

Married with children? Then we don’t need to tell you that balancing your relationships with your spouse and your kids can be difficult.

A book “Babyproofing Your Marriage” documents this challenge and offers advice. (You can read some of that in Monday’s WichiTalk.)

How do you balance time with your spouse and your children? Do you work different shifts to keep the household in top shape — and to keep your mental sanity? Do you take an evening “off” to get in couple time?

Tell us about how you’ve “babyproofed” your marriage by clicking on "comments" below.

Tailgating tips

With the Wildcats and Jayhawks competing in Manhattan on Saturday, it’s time to talk tailgating. Who do you think reigns supreme in tailgating? KU or K-State fans? I’m a KU grad, so I’ll sit this debate out …

If you choose to do the same, share your favorite tailgating recipes and tips.

Tailgating starts in Manhattan at 6 a.m. Saturday, five hours before game time. So here are a few tips from my experience tailgating at breakfast time at Arrowhead Stadium:

  • Grab a cast iron pan, grill and sausage links to get your breakfast started.
  • Purchase pancake mix that comes in a plastic jug. All you have to do is add water and shake.
  • Want to butter those pancakes? Spray-on butter makes it easy.
  • Hungry for eggs? Think Egg Beaters. They’re often a choice health-conscious people turn to. But they can be a tailgating treat, too: No shells!

How do you stay organized?

We at WichiTalk are certain that there are pristine and precise closets, storage rooms and craft rooms in Wichita. We’re looking for impressive organization strategies, simple (and sinfully stealable) approaches that we can share with our readers.
