So much fun, so little weekend

This weekend in Wichita is shaping up to be one of those weekends when you wish you could be in three places at once. Just consider the lineup of fun events going on around town: Wagonmasters Downtown Chili Cookoff, Final Friday, Steven Curtis Chapman’s concert, the Great Plains Renaissance Festival, Race for the Cure, Holiday Galleria, Symphony Showhouse, Exploration Place’s Race exhibit and more.

How do you and your friends or family decide what to do? Does majority rule? Do you take turns choosing (mom one night, dad the next afternoon)?

Fall fashion faux pas

It’s just about time for the Friday evening commute, and it’s 93 degrees out. Feels like we should be getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July, not the Autumnal Equinox, which is Sunday.

So here’s my question for you: Do you alter your wardrobe based on your calendar or your thermometer?

I really dislike socks and love sandals, but I try to stay away from sandals once fall officially begins. But I’m sure not going to pull on my pumpkin-colored corduroy blazer until it’s cold enough for it to feel snuggly and not oppressively hot.

Birth order and your mate

Where do you fall in your family’s birth order? The answer to that question may determine, in part, your compatibility with your mate, according to a story in today’s WichiTalk.

My husband and I are both the oldest children in our families. (I have a brother who’s 10 years my elder, a sibling age gap that left me a "functional oldest" to my two younger sisters.) According to the story, oldest children tend to be responsible (maybe the reason neither of us object to divvying chores). But, in love, they can be controlling (maybe the reason we’re both stubborn at times).

Are you a first-born married to an only child? A fourth married to a
second? How does your — and your spouses’ — birth order shape your
relationship? Click on "comments" below and share your story.

What do you love about being single?

Unmarried and Single Americans Week is this week, starting today (Sept. 16 to 22).

Are you a single person taking time to learn more about yourself, develop a hobby or go to school? Do you enjoy the freedom that comes with your single lifestyle or the opportunity to devote yourself to friends, volunteer work or another passion?

Tell us about why you love being single.

What time is your bedtime?

Our popular occasional feature "10 Questions With" often discloses the bedtimes of prominent Wichita-area women. In today’s, featuring master chocolatier Beth Tully of Cocoa Dolce, Beth shares that she tries to get to bed by 10:30 on weeknights but that she’s a night owl on Saturdays.

What about you? During the week, do you call it a day before the 10 o’clock news or in the wee hours of the morning before TV reruns give way to infomercials? Have you chosen a career that requires you to be up early (if you’re an early bird) or lets you sleep in later (if you’re a night owl)?

During the week, my attempts to get to bed before midnight usually don’t fare well. And on Friday and Saturday nights, my bedtime usually depends on what I have planned for Saturday and Sunday mornings. Nothing going on until the early afternoon? Stay up for that midnight flick. Heading out of town first thing in the morning for a college football game? Get to bed early so I can be ready to root for my team.

What do you love about fall?

It’s shaping up to be a cool evening, with a chilly rain and a current temperature in the 50s in Wichita. If that doesn’t announce that fall’s on its way, maybe the few leaves that already have started to fall does. So while you’re packing up those sandals and summer tops, share your favorite things about fall. Here’s a brief list to get you started:

  • Warm jackets
  • Mums
  • Football
  • Hot tea
  • Crispy leaves
  • Autumn colors
