Skip BLTs for this BST

During the weekend, I made my first trip of the year to the farmers market and was happy to find some beautiful bright red homegrown tomatoes, which I quickly sliced up for a sandwich. Using ingredients I just happened to have on hand, I created this new (and very simple sandwich) that I’ve dubbed a BST in honor of the sandwich’s basil, Swiss and tomato contents.

Lori’s BST sandwich
Fresh roll
Smear of basil pesto
Smear of low-fat mayo
Slice of Swiss cheese (the good kind from the deli)
Slice of tomato
Sprinkle of salt

**
Layer accordingly and serve with a pickle spear and additional tomato slice for good measure.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy homegrown tomatoes?

The OTHER ducky photo

When we’re working on cover stories for WichiTalk, we gather together a reporter, editor, designer and photographer to talk about how we can build a package that grabs your attention and gives you something to talk about. Often, part of that discussion is what props (clothing, gear, background, etc.) we want to use to create a setting for a photo illustration that speaks to the story. And that conversation prompts many of us to look through closets, storage boxes, garages and more at home for the perfect item we need for the photo.

For today’s cover photo of a model poolside at the North Branch YMCA pool, I had the perfect thing from a cruise-themed wedding shower I recently hosted: an inflatable ducky inner tube. Here’s a photo of my friends’ pup Roxy wearing the same inner tube. (She wasn’t quite as agreeable as our model on today’s cover … )

Let’s dance

Thanks to YouTube and the popularity of shows like “Dancing With the Stars,” couples’ first wedding dances are getting more attention and imagination, according to the Wall Street Journal. That might mean that couples are going all out, memorizing the choreography to "Thriller" or spending hours with a professional instructor perfecting the waltz.

When my husband and I were married, we sweetly swayed back and forth to Clint Black’s "Something That We Do." Nothing too out of the ordinary.

What was your first dance like? Are you taking lessons or planning to groove to “Thriller” at your upcoming reception? Did your husband split his pants doing a ’70s disco move during your first dance?

Color it finished

I had to laugh when I saw this story, from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, today:

Need another way to tell your ex it’s really over? Try nail polish. Essie cosmetics has introduced a special "Starting
Over" collection featuring colors that salute the independent spirit of
women who are starting a brand new life. Red-Y Set Ex coats nails with a fiery orange-red.
Wife Goes On is a bold true red. And Pinking Up the Pieces is an
iridescent blush pink. Each bottle is $8. See Essie.com.

Or you could just not return his calls …

Uplifting words

Reader Debbie Hauserman wrote to say that she had clinical depression in 1999 and obtained a taped program from the Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety.

Debbie wrote, "These tapes saved my life and there were many coping skills involved in this program. I always repeat and use this quote to help me when I feel like I am going in the wrong direction: ‘Change your mind; change your mood.’ " She said the phrase is a reminder to change negative feelings into positive ones.

How’s that for a sun safety warning?

Bliss Sunban Face, an SPF 30 sunscreen, bears these unusual instructions:

"Each morning, apply Sunban Face to your face, neck and any other skin that in 15 years you hope to see exuding youth rather than hanging like a vintage alligator handbag."

More words to live by

Reader Susanne
Stark e-mailed me a poem that hangs on a plaque where she can see it daily. She said that the quote is from Mary Jane Irion and that it helps her keep life in perspective.

"Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may, for it will not always be so.

One day I shall dig my fingers into the earth,
or bury my face in the pillow,
    or stretch myself taut,
or raise my hands to the sky,
And want more than all the world your return."

Collection for inspiration

Wichitan Janice Massucci e-mailed this photo of sayings that inspire her. From left:

1. A stress ball for squeezing that says, "I’d rather be … at the beach." She wrote, "I always smile when I look at it!"

2. From her sister, a framed copy of the Serenity Prayer, which says, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage
to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." Janice wrote that it’s helped her many times, "especially the years when my mom was suffering from chronic illness."

3. Also from her sis, a cat magnet that says, "Please make great pets when properly trained …"

Glass half full

In response to WichiTalk’s request for phrases that inspire you, reader Chuck Roach shared this one, which he said he wrote to express his general outlook when faced with adversity.

"Be
forever optimistic about the unknown and eventual outcome of your
endeavours. A positive attitude is free, and it beats the alternative
every time, even if the outcome does not live up to those
expectations."
