Correct candy count

WichiTalk’s candy contest, in which we challenged readers to count how many times the word “candy” appeared in the Oct. 25 all-candy issue, drew more than 700 entries.

The correct answer is 92. More than 30 people guessed correctly, so we had a drawing to determine the winner. The prize was a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant.

Thanks to all who participated.

Dressed to the canines

We asked WichiTalk readers to send us photos of their pets

in costume. Meet Maggie the collie, at left. Below are Kadena and Mya.

Check out today’s WichiTalk for tips on how to keep your four-legged friends safe on howl-oween. There’s a story about popular pet costumes this year, too.

Do you plan to dress Fido as Frankenstein this Halloween? E-mail your digital photo to wichitalk@wichitaeagle.com. And continue to check the blog for more photos.

If only it always worked that way

Sunday was a magical day. You’re actually forced to go around to your clocks and turn back time an hour. I love realizing Daylight Savings Time over and over again, specifically when I’m waking up and before I head to bed. If only we had an extra hour every day!

I spent my extra hour tailgating at the Kansas City Chiefs’ game.

What did you do with yours?

Final thoughts on Dallas fashion show

The Eagle’s Bonnie Bing will soon be back working on stories about spring fashion for you to read in WichiTalk this week. Here are her final reflections from her Dallas fashion trip:

It turned out I didn’t get to have dinner with Carmen Marc Valvo, but
his assistant, Il, and his director of public relations, Frank, were
great company along with several others. At one point the conversation
turned to the dresses we’ve seen on the Red Carpets at the many awards
shows. Leon Hall, who has worked with Joan Rivers critiquing what the
stars were wearing, surprised me by saying he thinks the Red Carpet
hoopla has run its course.

"It used to be that the stars picked out what they were going to wear
and it was fun to see who did it right and who didn’t. Now it’s all
about the stylist. And the jewels and who got paid what to wear the
jewels."

That’s true. Stylists are becoming the stars. Makes for pretty people on the Red Carpet, but not as much excitement and fun. After looking at spring fashion all day, I can say some of it is really
good looking, but I can’t say anything rocked my world except for some
astoundingly beautiful evening gowns. But just how often do we need an
evening gown? And very few could look as wonderful as the models in
them.

Tomorrow I am for sure going to get to meet Carmen Marc Valvo. I’m not
coming home until I get at least a short interview with the man!

I found another difference between Dallas and New York: Today it was
valet parking and a front row seat at the end of the runway. Nice.

Friday fashion report from Texas

Here’s the latest from The Eagle’s Bonnie Bing, who’s spending her Friday at the Dallas Apparel Spring Market surrounded by designers, runways and chic clothing. (Don’t get too jealous: She’ll be sharing much of what she learned with readers in next week’s WichiTalk.) Bonnie is hanging out today with Wichita-area women whose job is to scout out the latest fashions and select clothing to bring back to local shops that want to sell these dandy duds to you. Bonnie reports:

I’ve noticed over the years that by mid-afternoon I start hearing buyers say, "I think
I’ve had it. I can’t look at one more thing." Some of them start very early and
go from one appointment to another. It’s a whole lot more fun to stroll
through the halls in window-shopping heaven at The World Trade Center and talk
to designers.

And believe it or not, if all goes as planned, one other
fashion writer and I are supposed TO HAVE DINNER with designer Carmen Marc Valvo! I told my husband on the phone about how excited I am, and he said,
"Great! Is that what I’m supposed to say?" Dinner and time to talk to one of
my favorite designers! See, this is better than being a buyer.

A day for the cranks

Friday (Oct. 27) is National Cranky Co-Workers Day.

I’m not clear what this means, though. Are you supposed to celebrate the cranks in your work area? Try to cheer them up? Rejoice that you’re not one of them? Or get a crank-fest of your own going?

Too many options. It’s making me grumpy.

So, tell me. Do you have any true cranks working in your office? Anonymity is optional. Stories of snitiness required. Post now.

Boo-tiful WichiTalk cover

To find out how WichiTalk’s visual editor, Coryanne Graham, crafted this week’s candy issue cover using all candy, check out The Editor’s Desk, another Eagle blog.

While you’re there, you also can see a photo of Emmett the giraffe giving me a sloppy wet kiss, which happened during the makings of another WichiTalk cover. Talk about on-the-job hazards!

Mingling with fashionistas

Today is this year’s Day No. 1 for Bonnie at the Dallas Apparel Spring Market. There she’ll go to showrooms and talk to reps, buyers and designers to get a lead on what trends for spring will be. Here are her musings on this show compared to her annual New York fashion trips:

The big difference is that in Dallas everything is in one building, the enormous World Trade Center. In New York, a lot of the shows are in a huge tent in Bryant Park. Both trips are something I look forward to for many reasons, but even after 26 years, it’s still a bit confusing to look at spring fashions in October while working on the holiday fashion section and checking out fall fashions in February.

Another item on her agenda today is to get a few minutes with Carmen Marc Valvo, the eveningwear designer who is this year’s Dallas Fashion Award recipient.

I have only one thing in my closet that has his label in it. Talk about a good excuse for a new evening number.

More later.

What’s in a fashion writer’s suitcase?

The Eagle’s Bonnie Bing, who keeps you up on the latest fashion trends, is headed to the Dallas Apparel Spring Market at the World Trade Center in Dallas.

What’s a fashion show-bound fashion writer to pack? Her suitcase contents aren’t the same as when she travels each year to New York for Fashion Week. Here’s what she says:

Getting ready to go to Dallas and bracing for a New York trip are two completely different experiences. For New York in February, I fill a suitcase (alright, sometimes two) with black clothes. Add comfortable footwear (and some that are fashionably uncomfortable), a coat, and I’m set. Dallas in October requires only a light jacket and, even though a lot of what’s in my suitcase is black, there’s actually some color mixed in.

Check back for more Dallas updates from Bonnie.

Candy counting craze

Today’s issue of WichiTalk is all about candy, and we asked readers to scour the pages of sweets to see how many times the word "candy" appears.
