Just plain nice

The other day, I went to pick up some eyeglasses for a WichiTalk story at MyOptix on east Douglas. I was greeted by several friendly, helpful faces. After they told me they’d sent the glasses with the model earlier that day, we started making friendly conversation.

I was in the midst of describing the sorry state of my own glasses when one of the gentlemen in the store got up and offered to fix them for me. He cut off the end of a screw that had been sticking out since I’d gotten them repaired the last time, then adjusted both sides so they’d fit my face better.

I hadn’t realized that I’d had a constant headache until I put my glasses back on. They fit perfectly, and if my eyes could have breathed a sigh of relief I’m sure they would have.

It’s so wonderful to run into people who are nice without having any particular reason for it. Practicing random acts of kindness is a great way to make someone’s day…I know it made mine a whole lot better.

Why is losing weight so hard?

WichiTalk’s Weight-Loss Challenge volunteers are working hard to meet the goals they’ve set for themselves, as you might have read in today’s WichiTalk.

At least one has hit her first plateau, that dreaded time when the scale won’t budge. She knows what she needs to do but could use some encouragement.

Do you have any advice for her, or for any of the others? Share your hints or tips, or share your own weight-loss progress. Post your comments here.

Wichita’s survivors

In Tuesday’s WichiTalk, we introduced MaryAnne Caster, a Wichitan with breast cancer who has chosen to get on with life.

We also invited readers to share stories - of themselves or others - of other survivors. You can do that by posting your comments here.

Which kind of Wichitan are you?

It’s a Friday, which means you’re likely planning where to eat out this weekend.

When it comes to new restaurants, it seems that there are two kinds of people. The first have to eat at the newest place as soon as they can, regardless of the three-hour waits and crowds of people. The second would rather wait until the hype dies down and there’s open seating during normal dinner hours.

I’m torn because I love to see the newest, most-talked about places, but I hate wasting time waiting and waiting for my table. Thank goodness for call-ahead seating!

Sensational Sunset

Here’s an uplifting treat for those of you who are down about the gloomy skies overhead. The sunset last night was absolutely gorgeous. Below is a photograph I took at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. I hope it’ll brighten your rainy day.

Favorite cocktails

Thursday’s WichiTalk cover story includes recipes for four classic cocktails: the mojito, Bloody Mary, martini and sangria. What’s your favorite cocktail, whether it’s one you order at a local bar or shake up in your kitchen?

The story also will include a description of four essential bar tools. Do you have one you can’t get through a cocktail party without? For our wedding, someone gave my husband and me a cocktail shaker shaped like a penguin. It was an unexpected gift, albeit quirky and fun. But it’s a great conversation starter when we break it out on poker night.

Rachael Ray on display

Fans of foodie Rachael Ray can get their fix in just about any mediumthey want. There are her cookbooks. (Her book "2, 4, 6, 8 - Great Meals for Couples or Crowds" is due out Nov. 7th.) And there’s her magazine, "Everyday with Rachael Ray." Most of us got to know her on TV, and this week the "Rachael Ray" talk show debuted. You can watch it at 9 tonight on KWCV, Channel 33/Cable 5.

So, what’s the deal with this woman? Is she the next generation Martha Stewart? Do you think she’ll be a fad or a longtime icon?

Fall traditions

I love, love, love everything about fall. The leaves, the chilly weather, Halloween and Thanksgiving…the list goes on and on.

But the very best thing about fall? Family traditions, of course. Every year, my sister and I dig through our holiday decorations and plaster the house in autumn decor. We also take a trip to the pumpkin patch, nibbling on mini loaves of pumpkin bread that they
sell at the farm as we search for the perfect pumpkins and gourds for the front porch.

What are some of your favorite ways to celebrate the season of falling leaves? Share your comments here.

The pumpkins are here!

I noticed today that grocery store displays of pumpkins and hay bales are out. Too bad it’s 90 degrees out or it would feel more like fall.

Need an excuse to skip the salad?

One of my favorite quick dinner shortcuts is to build a salad using bagged fresh spinach. But after hearing the reports of the E. coli outbreak, I think I’ll be switching tactics.

Make sure you check out this story before you head to the grocery store.
