Back off, buddy!

I’m very grateful to live in a city where I don’t really have to worry about being mugged or attacked, but I know the risk is always there, no matter how safe Wichita may be.

While preparing for an upcoming story I’m writing about self-defense, I realized that I would probably panic if I were attacked. I’ve never had any formal training because I’ve never felt particularly threatened by the opposite sex. Sure, I’ve come across guys that I wouldn’t want to encounter in a dark alley…but thankfully, I encounter them in public places (and I generally steer clear of dark alleys, too).

Have you ever taken a self-defense class? If you have, do you feel that you’d be able to protect yourself from an attacker? Share your stories, thoughts and experiences here.

Katie’s surprise makeover

If you watched any TV news this morning, you probably saw the photo of Katie Couric, who starts her stint as "CBS Evening News" anchor Tuesday. An in-house network publication altered a photo of her in a business suit to make her look 20 pounds lighter — apparently without her permission.

So the buzz this morning is whether she, the first woman to sit in the "Evening News" anchor seat, is being held to a different standard as the men who have come before her. Do women face more scrutiny for their appearance in the workplace?

This weather is gorgeous!

I generally steer clear of cliche weather smalltalk, but I cannot help but tell everyone I chat with that I love this weather! I’ll happily take all of the sunny 75-degree days I can get. The cool mornings and evenings are already starting to smell like autumn. Bring on the fall!

Bad timing

In today’s column I mentioned how last week’s demotion of Pluto to "dwarf planet" status is news of cosmic proportions, and will change the way my children learn about the solar system.

The development also, no doubt, has at least one book publisher cringing.

Just today, in the morning mail, I opened a box of brand new products from Chronicle Books. There on top was "A is for Astronaut: Exploring Space from A to Z." And there on the "P" page. . . "Planets. There are nine known in our solar system."

And there he is — little bitty Pluto.

Get it now, people. It’s sure to be a collector’s item. :-)

How will you mark Katrina, Sept. 11 anniversaries?

It seems you can’t turn on the TV now without seeing some kind of program dedicated to the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina or the five-year anniversary of Sept. 11th. Even the Weather Channel has this kind of coverage. At a time when we’re so bombarded by options, are you overwhelmed? Or have you found something that helps you reflect on these milestones?

I finally watched the movie "Flight 93" and recently checked out the library’s copy of "102 Minutes: The Untold Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers." And a few youth I mentor are putting together care packages to send to hurricane victims in Biloxi, Miss., whom we met earlier this summer are still trying to piece their lives back together. Are you doing anything to mark the anniversaries?

Punch cards gone wild

Retail frequent buyer cards and punch cards have become ridiculously popular. I was carrying so many that I’ve relegated them to one section of my wallet. My inventory includes punch cards (or stamp cards) for: smoothies, oil changes, movie rentals, coffee, slices of pizza, dollars spent at a bookstore and a beauty product store, ice tea, ice cream cones and breakfast entrees. Heck, I almost need a separate wallet just for them.

They are a bit of a hassle, but it’s such a treat when I get that 10th iced tea or fifth oil change free, especially if they are things I would have spent my money on with or without the card perks.

How many cards do you carry? Any you recommend? (I think the oil change is one of the best deals. Check with your service station to see if they offer a punch card!) Click on "comments" below and tell all.

Grocery shopping: How fast R U?

Who doesn’t know what it’s like to run to the grocery store during a

And we want to know if you have a “dash and dine” recipe of your own. Send it to us, and you could win a slightly used copy of “The Six O’Clock Scramble” by Aviva Goldfarb, from which the recipes in Wednesday’s cover story were taken or adapted.

Click on "comments" below and post your quick recipe or e-mail it to jstumpe@wichitaeagle.com. We’ll consider the best of the bunch and draw the book winner at random from them.

Calling female football fans, fanatics

With school back in session and professional exhibition football
games on TV, we know the season many of us have been waiting for is
upon us (that’s football season, not fall!).

WichiTalk is scouting for ladies who are all about football.

Are you a gal known to scream the loudest from the sideline? Do you
play football every chance you get? Do you track stats, travel to games
and know the term "split end" can mean something other than it’s time
for a haircut?

If so, we want to hear from you. Click on "comments" below and tell us why you love football.

If I were an athlete . . .

I enjoy sports, but I haven’t been competitive since I played softball in fifth grade. Nevertheless, whenever the Olympics come around, I find myself thinking how much fun it would be to be competing.

In the Summer Games, I’d be a gymnast, of course (even though I could never stay on the balance beam in gym class) and in the Winter Games, I’d be a downhill racer (even though I have to take "rest breaks" whenever I get going too fast on the blue slopes).

How about you? What’s your Olympic dream? Post your comments here.
