Juggling act

When I was a full-time college student, I don’t think I ever truly considered what it must be like for adults to return to school to earn a degree. I saw them in my classes, and they were pretty quiet, except for the moments when they would share personal experiences related to working or raising a family.

I January, I made the decision to go back to school to pursue a nursing career. It’s something I’ve always considered, but was too scared to do. For the past four or five months, I’ve been working in the morning and going to class in the afternoon and evening, finishing up a few prerequisites before entering the nursing program (how can I possibly have any prereqs left after 5 years of college?). Let’s just say this experience has really opened my eyes.

Switching gears from work to school can sometimes be difficult, and there have been numerous times where I’d rather have spent the evening in front of the TV instead of studying for tests. But there’s a part of me that rejoices in the fact that I’ve taken the leap of being a non-traditional student…it’s challenging, and I’m learning sooo much.

So kudos to all of you out there who are juggling a job, going to school and in many cases, raising a family too. How do you manage to stay organized? Do you find enough
time to study, keep up at work and spend time with your family? Share your stories here.

What to wear, what to wear

Eighty degrees one morning, 40 the next. Luckily, I’m behind in getting my closet switched from fall/winter to spring/summer.

Bonnie Bing calls the summer/fall what-to-wear season "fummer." Wonder what we’d call this? I have my own idea, but it’s not fit for print. Yours?

Love boutiques? Me too.

I can usually find shoes, purses and clothing that I love at bigger stores (such as Wal-Mart and Target), and I’m thrilled that I scored such a cute ensemble. But then I see my great find on about two or three other women in the weeks following my purchase, and it leaves me feeling a little bummed.

That’s when I love to head to one of Wichita’s boutiques, where I’m sure to find something one-of-a-kind. They’ve got fantastic clothes, awesome jewelry and purses, and another one of my obsessions: trinkets. Picture frames, notepads, little boxes, coasters, pens…just about any little item you never knew you needed.

What are your favorite Wichita boutiques? If you don’t have any, be sure to check out today’s WichiTalk section for just a few of the fabulous shops Wichita has to offer.

Own any ancient electronics?

I have a very, very, very old CD player. It’s so old, it was a gift for my 21st birthday, which I regret to inform you was a loooooooooooooong time ago. But I still use it, decrepit as it is.

Do you own any outdated electronic equipment? An old rotary phone? An answering machine with tape? A stereo still fitted with a turntable?

Share here.

How are you a plantaholic?

Every spring, I head to the nursery to buy several flats of beautiful flowers. I bring them home and put them in dozens of terra-cotta containers that I strategically place on my front steps, back deck, etc. Every year I vow to keep them watered and thriving. I still have a couple of last year’s dead plants in those containers. (Whoops!) My name is Lori, and I am a plantaholic.

Earlier this week, several of us here in the newsroom were comparing our spring plant shopping habits. Many of us found common ground. We set the bar high in April. We have dead plants in early July. Check out our 10 signs of a plantaholic in today’s WichiTalk. Tell us whether the signs describe your spring gardening tendencies. Or share another way to describe your passion for plants.

And in the meantime, happy planting (or at least plant shopping)!

It drives me crazy

As I was running some errands for work this morning, I observed two very ironic situations involving cars and their drivers.

1. I was following a minivan with a bumper sticker that read "Drive now, talk later." I felt a little guilty at first (I often talk on my cell phone while driving), but then I realized that the driver of the van was on her cell phone!!!
2. Another minivan had a cartoon sticker on one side of the rear window depicting a little girl with her pants pulled down, saying "Get off my a**," and on the other side of the van was a decal of a Jesus fish. Wow.

Do ever see these phenomenons while driving, and do they leave your mind completely boggled? I’ve always thought that you can tell a lot about a person by what’s on the back of their car. But are we really honest about what we stand for when we turn our bumpers into mini-billboards?

Now, that’s scary!

One of our photographers asked for my help in collecting "props" for the picture that goes with our medicine cabinet story in Tuesday’s WichiTalk. He wanted a couple of those familiar orange prescription medicine bottles.

We had plenty. And I was forced into doing a little cleaning as part of my reporting.

I think the oldest was from 1998. I’d like it known that it did NOT have my name on it. I’ll be talking with my husband about whether he really thought he could still take that.

Can you top my old stuff? What’s the most out-of-date thing in your medicine cabinet? Tell us about it here.

Wedding tunes

At my wedding, my father and I swing danced to The Temptations’ "My Girl." I tried to make sure that the music we had at the reception reflected who I was, not a list of recommended wedding songs that didn’t suit my personality. So imagine my disappointment when I saw on a recent report that the song is the No. 4 most requested song for wedding father-daughter dances. Oh well. We had a blast swingin’ and spinnin’.

The song my husband and I danced to was Clint Black’s "Something That We Do." I’m not a huge country music fan, but I love the words to this song:

I remember well the day we wed
I can see that picture in my head
I still believe the words we said
Forever will ring true
Love is certain, love is kind
Love is yours and love is mine
But it isn’t something that we find
It’s something that we do

You can find the complete lyrics here.

Check out today’s WichiTalk for one list of the most popular songs for wedding first dances, father-daughter dances and mother-son dances.

What were/will be your songs? Tell us about your meaningful, hilarious or funky wedding songs.

What kind of Nick Lachey fan are you?

You’ve probably heard by now that Nick Lachey will be appearing at next month’s River Festival. And that means you can place yourself in one of the following groups:

Group 1: You love Nick Lachey, even beyond the days of 98 Degrees and Jessica Simpson and can’t wait to see him in Wichita.

Group 2: You were into Nick when he was playing his wife’s down-to-earth counterpart on the MTV reality show, "Newlyweds." But you’d rather spend your time at the food court than smashed in a crowd trying to catch a glimpse of him.

Group 3: You find yourself asking, "Who’s Nick Lachey?" (And you pronounce his last name "Latch-ee.")

Which kind of fan are you?

How often do you cook at home?

Surveys show that most people eat a home-cooked dinner between three and five times a week.

I don’t know about you, but I’m lucky to hit three. And some weeks, that’s counting bagged salad topped with deli chicken. Some of my secrets to making time for homemade dinners:

  • My George Foreman Grill is great for seafood, pork chops and veggies.
  • If grilling or entertaining during the weekend, I make extra for leftovers. Sunday night’s steak makes great Monday night steak fajitas.
  • I shop for fresh fruits and veggies on Sunday so I have no excuse for not eating them once the busy week ramps up.

What’s your home cooking average, and how do you make time for home-cooked meals? Click on "comments" and share your advice. And check out WichiTalk this week. Each issue will feature meal ideas and tips from a woman who has cooked for some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities. (You said you can’t feed your family like stars?)
