Learning experiences

Have you read "A Special Education," a new book by well-known New York fashion designer Dana Buchman, whose upscale clothing is available in Wichita? In the book, she chronicles the journey of learning to cope with a child who has learning disabilities.

Click on "comments" below and tell us what you thought of the book. Or share your own story about life with a child who has learning disabilities.

Watch for Bonnie Bing’s story about the book in Monday’s WichiTalk.

Take this job…

As a reporter, I deal with my share of — shall I say — disgruntled customers. Some choose to express themselves by sending me e-mails detailing what a moron I am. Others choose to cut my column pictures out and take a pen to my teeth. I get that. And after more than 10 years at it, I’m used to it.

But I don’t have to deal with those people face-to-face very often. That doesn’t mean I don’t worry about people who do.

I’m interested in hearing from people who have jobs that include regular tongue lashings from total strangers. Waitresses. Return counter clerks. Telemarketers.

How do you do it? How do you keep from taking it personally? How do you cope? If you’re one of these people, comment here. And tell us your worst horror story as well as your best tip.

To prank or not to prank?

April Fools’ Day is Saturday. Do you have a mischievous prank planned? Do you love to pull stunts on your family and friends or do you think that’s downright cruel?

At The Eagle, we have people on both sides of the fence. Watch for columnist Denise Neil’s and our resident practical jokester Kevin Sheedy’s articles sounding off on why they hate and love April Fools’ Day pranks.

In the meantime, I want to know what you think. Click on "comments" below and make your case.

Paper or PDA?

I may be one of the only people in the world without a PDA. I just can’t see myself using it allthat often…and I have a tendency to lose stuff, so the stylus pen would be long gone within hours of purchasing the device.

I occasionally make an attempt at keeping a planner, but it usually falls to the wayside when I either misplace the
planner or get too busy to write things down in it. Thus, I revert to my dry-erase board and sticky note system, because if it’s right in front of my face, I’ll probably remember to do it.

Do you have a planner or have you updated to a PDA? What are some of your other favorite organizational tools?

Prom: Memorable night or major investment?

Whenever I walk by the formal dress section at Dillard’s, I breathe a sigh of relief that I’m past the prom phase of my life. Sure, the initial search for the perfect dress, shoes and accessories was fun, but between the cost of those things, plus getting my hair done and paying for pictures, dinner and tickets, prom got to be a pretty darned expensive affair.

However, before I complain too much, I should point out that I wasn’t actually the one who paid for all of the aforementioned items. My mom shelled out the bucks to make sure my prom nights were absolutely fantastic. I was incredibly lucky to have that financial support…I certainly didn’t make enough money in high school to cover everything.

How much is too much when it comes to prom spending? Do you pay for all or a majority of your kids’ prom expenses? How much do you expect to spend this year? Did you ever go totally over the top and spend a ridiculous amount of money? Leave your comments here.

How do you keep your kids fit?

When I go to the gym, kids are everywhere. They’re walking on the track, playing basketball — even  lifting weights. It’s great to see them so active. How do you find time to motivate your kids to exercise? How do you keep them involved and interested? We want to know your secrets. Click on "comments" below and tell us.

And check out the story in Tuesday’s WichiTalk about how three local families use gyms to stay fit.

King’s palace becomes national treasure

You’ve probably heard all about Elvis’ Graceland home becoming an official national landmark today. I’ve never been to Memphis and am wondering if it’s worth the trip. Do you think Graceland is worthy of National Historic Landmark status?

Rest in puggy peace…

Today’s a sad day at the Eagle. Gardening writer Annie Calovich’s pet pug, Emeline, passed away early this morning. The sweet little girl was 14 years old, and she lived a long, pugtastic life. But that doesn’t make losing her any easier.

I’m particularly sad because Annie was the first "pug person" I ever knew, and she’s been a very good aunt to Norton, the pug who showed up at my front door two years ago and moved right in. No one loves pugs more than Annie, and I know she’s hurting today.

Here’s a question — have you ever lost a beloved pet, and if so, how did you deal with it? What can you say to or do for friends going through this difficult process?
