Cell phone donations

This morning, a reader responded to my story about cell phone plans with this query:

"We
recently upgraded our cell phones and now have two cell phones we don’t use.  I
understand that they can be donated, and used for women who are in dire
circumstances.  How do we donate our phones and do we have to do anything to
them first?"

For those of you in the same boat, I did some research in our archives. I discovered two local
charities that put cell phone donations on their wish lists for the 2005 holiday
season. There’s also a national recycling program, Shelter Alliance, that accepts
phones and redistributes them to those in need. You don’t have to clear the
phone’s memory if you send it to Shelter Alliance, but you’ll need to check with
the local charities to find out their policies. Here’s their contact
info:

— Catholic Charities Harbor House, 437 N. Topeka, 264-8344,
offers a haven to women and their children who are victims of domestic abuse.

— Butler County Retired Senior Volunteer Program,
510 E. Augusta St. Augusta, 775-0500, provides volunteer work for those 55 and
older.

I’m also working on an article about children and cell phones. If you know of family with a 5-12 year old who recently got a phone of their own and would be willing to share their story, please e-mail me.

Math, revisited. Not really

Remember all those theorems you had to learn (and promptly forgot) in high school math? I’m trying to remember them as I look at my son’s geometry book.

I know some of those things are valuable later in life (will the new armoire make the corner into the bedroom?) but I propose we start teaching some math lessons that are really practical.

Such as:

Time-filling theorem: Activities expand to fill the time available. I thought I had a free evening last night. I did — after I finished all the little odds and ends that took till 9:15.

Space-filling corollary: Stuff expands. I cleaned out my side of the closet two weeks ago. And I threw stuff away. The closet is full again.

So, my question: What truths have you found that we ought to be teaching? Add your comments, please. Let’s get a list together that we can share in WichiTalk.

Commercial fans, get ready

Sunday is the big football game — and the big commercial day.

Advertisers are expected to spend more than $1 billion to make you laugh and tell all your friends for days to come, "Did you see that commercial? It was hilarious." (Not to mention that they’d like you to buy their product, too … )

Do you watch the game for the game or for the commercials? What’s your favorite Super Bowl commercial yet?

Happy Chinese New Year!

The Year of the Dog kicks off today, according to the Chinese calendar.

Those born this year are said to be honest, faithful, worriers and critics.

I was born in the Year of the Sheep. Baaaaa. That means I have charm, elegance and an artistic streak, not to mention a tendency to complain. I tend to agree with this analysis. Except for the complaining part. (Did I mention that it’s a bummer that my mascot can’t be a cute puppy? Sheep are stinky, dirty and boring. Waaaa!)

Check out this story to see find out whether you’re a sheep, rat, rabbit or other creature.

Tell us what you are and whether the description matches your personality.

Remembering the Challenger

At dinner tonight, my friends remembered aloud what they had been doing 20 years ago when seven astronauts died in the Challenger shuttle explosion. One watched the terrible accident live on TV. I was a student in class at that moment. But when my teacher, who had stepped out of the classroom to watch it, returned crying, we all knew something dreadful had happened. Do you remember that day? It still breaks my heart.

Share your celeb snapshots

Did you hear about the lucky Wichitans who snapped cell phone photos of actor Harrison Ford when he was in town recently eating a burrito at Connie’s Mexican Cafe?

It made me wonder how many other local amateur photographers have photos of the rich and famous.

In October when Ty Pennington of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" came to town, several of you shared pictures you’d taken of him around Wichita.

So post your photos here of Harrison, Ty or any other celebrity or e-mail them to wichitalk@wichitaeagle.com and we’ll get them up on this blog.

Oprah says ‘Ooops’

Oprah Winfrey surprised many viewers — along with embattled author James Frey — when she announced today on her TV show that she regretted defending Frey against allegations that he made up parts of his best-selling memoir, "A Million Little Pieces."  According to an AP story, Frey — who was a special guest on Oprah’s show today — looked stunned when she told him she felt duped by him. She also said she regretted going on the "Larry King Show" a couple of weeks ago to defend Frey.  Winfrey helped the book reach 3.5 million in sales by choosing it for her book club last September.
Did you watch Oprah’s show today?

The holy trinity includes … Kanye?

Well, dear readers, the media world is abuzz this week with the news that Kanye West — he of the many Grammy nominations — poses as Jesus on the cover of Rolling Stone.

West got kudos when his single "Jesus Walks" became an MTV hit after critics said a hip-hop song with religious content would never make it on secular TV. But now he’s in the doghouse for not having appropriately Christ-like humility.

Is it OK for a rapper to pose as a religious figure on a magazine cover?

His response: "In America, they want you to accomplish these great feats, to pull off these David Copperfield-type stunts. You want me to be great, but you don’t ever want me to say I’m great?"

For some, the stunt fits the rapper’s outsize personality and outrageous boasts. For others, it’s a sacrilegious move by the New York media elite.

    Breaking hunk news

I don’t always agree with the lists that entertainment journalists are apt to manufacture to get discussions going. Although I always read them. And I always discuss them.

Finally, though, I’ve come across one that’s almost entirely accurate. The AP moved a story today about In Touch Weekly’s new list of hottest hunks on television.

Coming in at No. 1… Josh Holloway, the brooding bad boy who so hunkily plays Sawyer on "Lost." He even beat out his supposedly hunkier co-star, Matthew Fox.

Other right-on actors making the list — Patrick Dempsey of "Grey’s Anatomy" and Tom Welling of "Smallville."

I can think of a few more I’d have nominated, including "Love Monkey’s" Tom Cavanaugh.

Who’d make your top 10 list?

    And two become one …

What do you think about the two big mergers announced yesterday?

The two smallest television networks — UPN and the WB — will merge this fall into a new network called the CW, a move with younger and minority viewers in mind. Of the shows on those networks, including "Everybody Hates Chris," "Veronica Mars" and "Smallville," I’ve really only watched "Girlmore Girls" with much interest, probably because the mother-daughter banter among three generations of women always made me laugh.

And then there’s the news that Disney is buying Pixar, an announcement that I personally found less surprising. It should be interesting to see what new creations they come up with. I love "Monsters, Inc."  It’s one of the few "kid show" movies my husband and I (who have no children) have in our DVD collection.

What do you think about these moves? Good? Bad? Or are you indifferent? Leave your comments here.
