Blog registration coming

FYI: In the next day or so, WE Blog will start requiring registration in order to post comments. If you already are registered on Kansas.com, you are set. If not, it is a quick, simple process. Registration isn’t a cure-all, but it should help prevent nic stealing and reduce sock puppets and drive-by shootings. Once it starts, please let us know if there are technical problems.

Blog update

blog logoThanks for your support and patience as we moved this blog from Typepad to WordPress. We’re still working on some bugs.

FYI: There is a filter that can block posts if they have more than three links (it’s to catch porn spam), so you may need to break a post into two or more separate posts if you have a lot of links.

Our tech people are working on a preview option for comments and are hopeful that can be added.

Also, in the past you’ve been able to use the address http://blogs.kansas.com to get to this blog. In the near future, you’ll need to use the full address: http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog.

Merry Christmas, WE Bloggers

Christmastree Having seen the wish for a white Christmas come true, many south-central Kansans will do their part today to make the holiday merry and bright.
May those aching from the absence of loved ones who are among the courageous men and women in our military know their families are in the community’s prayers and hearts.
May those who have lost relatives and friends this year to illness, accidents, homicide and suicide feel their grief eased by the season’s joy.
May the other challenges of this year — whether as shared as Greensburg’s devastation or as singular as a lost job or broken heart — lead to better days.
With aircraft plants hiring and agriculture and energy surging, the region has every reason to be optimistic about the gifts that 2008 may bring.
In the meantime, merry Christmas to all.

They’re working on it

Bloggers: We’re aware of the problem with the hyperactive spam filter on Typepad, and have registered our concerns with them. Here’s Typepad’s response as of this morning:

"Today we have made a change to the spam filter that should greatly
reduce the number of legitimate comments marked as spam. More
information is available at Everything TypePad.
If you are still seeing legitimate comments marked as spam, please
include the text of the comment in your help ticket. Thanks!"

We hope that solves the problem. In the meantime, be aware that The Eagle plans to change blog providers in the near future.

We’re No. 5!

I was asked at the blog meet-up about how WE Blog ranked compared with other blogs. I have stats only for other papers in our newspaper group, but for January, here were the Top 5:
1. Miami Herald’s Dave Barry Blog
2. Kansas City Star’s Crime Scene KC blog
3. San Jose Mercury News A+E Interactive blog
4. Philadelphia Inquirer’s Blinq blog
5. WE Blog
Pretty darn good, especially given our market size (and we’re close to overtaking the Blinq blog). And as I mentioned, those other blogs aren’t about politics.
