Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture for allowing flexibility on maximum caloric limits for meats and grains in school lunches. “This has been a battle for common sense in the cafeteria,” Roberts said in a statement. “These guidelines were leaving students hungry throughout the school day and athletic events.” USDA loosened daily and weekly portion limits in 2012. The new rules make that change permanent. “In the end we were able to convince USDA to listen to reason,” Roberts said.
