A year ago the Legislature’s new leaders promised to do their work in just 80 days rather than the allotted 90. But the session stretched to 99 days amid fights between the two chambers over taxes and the budget. As the 2014 session began, House Speaker Ray Merrick (in photo), R-Stilwell, declined to make any predictions about a session that arguably shouldn’t take as long because of the two-year budget that passed last year. “We are going to try and get in and get out,” Merrick told the Topeka Capital-Journal, acknowledging, “that’s me talking, and I haven’t seen everything that’s coming yet.”
