Merrick’s talking points could be fighting words

Kansas House Speaker Ray Merrick, R-Stilwell, prepared a 12-page memorandum of talking points for House Republicans, but they likely will be taken as fighting words in various quarters of the state, our Friday editorial notes. Merrick called for school consolidation (needed but strongly opposed, particularly rural Kansas) and questioned the economic value of road projects (strongly supported by many business leaders and local governments).

Kansas missed out on insurance marketplace

After Gov. Sam Brownback returned a $31.5 million federal grant to create a Kansas-specific health-insurance marketplace, the person who was poised to lead the Kansas project, Gary Schneider, left the state and became project manager for the Colorado Health Benefit Exchange, the Kansas Health Institute News Service reported. The result? Colorado’s insurance marketplace is working relatively smoothly, while Kansans who need insurance are stuck with the problem-plagued federal website.
