Historic order for Beechcraft is well-timed

Congratulations to Beechcraft Corp. for landing the biggest order for propeller aircraft in the history of general aviation. The $1.4 billion order from new company Wheels Up for up to 105 King Air 350i aircraft  includes maintenance, and should bolster hiring and help secure Beechcraft’s future into 2015. That’s a welcome development for Beechcraft, especially coming just six months after it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. And what’s good for Beechcraft is good for Wichita, just as it has been for 81 years.

KU’s plans for Wichita campus good for state’s health

Under threat of state funding cuts, University of Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little warned in April that the KU School of Medicine-Wichita faced being cut from a four-year program back to a two-year one. So it was great news last week that even though KU did see a significant funding cut, Gray-Little asked the Kansas Board of Regents for an additional $4.5 million in state funding to double the class size at the Wichita campus, to 56 first- and second-year students, and to fund faculty physician positions. The Legislature would need to follow through on the dollars. But amid tremendous change in medicine, and with the need for physicians growing statewide, the request is an important endorsement of the value of the Wichita campus not only to KU but to the state’s health and wellness.
