Conservatives sure like amending state constitution

Conservative GOP lawmakers want to amend the state constitution to give Gov. Sam Brownback more control in picking judges. They also want to amend it to try to avoid having to suitably fund education. And now Kansas Securities Commissioner Aaron Jack wants a constitutional amendment to prevent the nationalization of private businesses by the federal government. Jack contends the “Economic Freedom Amendment” is needed to protect property rights, but it seems doubtful that the amendment would accomplish much – or that this is a serious problem that necessitates altering our constitution.

Roberts among eight ‘no’ votes on reviving VAWA

Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., was among the Republicans on the losing side of the Senate’s 85-8 procedural vote Monday on the Violence Against Women Act, which is expected to win bipartisan reauthorization in the chamber Thursday. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., did not vote Monday but has said he will support the revised bill; he and Roberts voted against VAWA’s reauthorization last spring, before it stalled in the House. As Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said: “This is an equal-opportunity crime that harms people regardless of their political affiliation, their profession or their status in life. It’s an issue that deserves bipartisan support.”
