Kansas lawmakers oppose contraception rule; public backs it

Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita, are criticizing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services rule that religiously affiliated businesses must include contraception in their health insurance plans. “If the government can compel an individual or group to violate one’s ‘sacred’ conscience, then there is no limit to government power,” Moran said. Pompeo argued that “forcing millions to violate their religious convictions in the name of progressive policy prescriptions is not consistent with the principles on which America was founded.” But most polls show majority support for the rule, including among Catholics. A Public Religion Research Institute poll found that 58 percent of Catholics back the mandate.
