Families, state not helped by food-stamp change

The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services contends that it needed to change how it calculated food-stamp benefits to be fair. The old system, which nearly every state uses, tried to adjust for families that include a mix of undocumented immigrants and U.S. citizens. But in changing the system, SRS is now denying benefits to needy U.S. children. And who was helped by this change? How many needy families are now getting benefits that wouldn’t have before? None. The food-stamp program is federally funded, including administrative costs. So not only did the SRS change not help anyone, it means that Kansas is turning away federal money that could have helped needy U.S. citizens. How is that fair or smart?
