Former George W. Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson didn’t exactly defend GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s negative campaign ad against President Obama. He noted that the ad “clearly takes Obama’s words out of context,” showing Obama as saying that “if we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.” In fact, Obama was quoting a comment made in 2008 by someone associated with John McCain’s presidential campaign. But Gerson noted that Obama hasn’t been above taking comments out of context. “This is not to argue that two wrongs make a right,” Gerson said. “It is only to note that, in a presidential election, the truth often gets its hair mussed. And Obama has frequently done the mussing.”
