Slow progress in Saudi Arabia

Though progress is coming much, much too slowly, it is good that Saudi Arabia is starting to grant more rights to women. This week the kingdom announced that women would be able to vote and run as candidates in local elections — though not until 2015. But the historic reform was undermined the next day when a Saudi court sentenced a woman to 10 lashes for driving a car. Thank goodness King Abdullah reportedly has revoked the sentence — though women still aren’t allowed to drive in the country.

More record-keeping woes for Kobach

Campaign-finance record-keeping doesn’t appear to be Kris Kobach’s forte. During Kobach’s chairmanship in 2007 and 2008, the Kansas Republican Party committed multiple federal campaign-finance violations, the Federal Election Commission said last summer. Then Thursday we learned from the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission that Kobach’s 2010 campaign for secretary of state omitted about $35,000 worth of contributions and $42,000 in spending from reports filed in July and October 2010 and in January — something that could result in a $5,000 fine for Kobach’s campaign treasurer, state Rep. Tom Arpke, R-Salina. It shouldn’t be too much to expect Kansas’ top record-keeper to ensure his own campaign-finance records and reports are handled by the book.
