Perry will be focus of GOP debate

Tonight’s GOP presidential debate will be all about Texas Gov. Rick Perry. “In three short weeks since becoming a candidate, Mr. Perry has become the new front-runner, and the media focus on his record and his comments has robbed the other candidates of political oxygen,” the New York Times reported. As a result, Perry enters the debate “with a lot to gain from a solid performance, but also a lot to lose — among donors, activists, the Republican establishment — if he stumbles or seems out of the mainstream.”

Brace for blitz on ending income tax

The Kansas Policy Institute, a Wichita-based free-market group, wants to raise $500,000 to launch a “full-fledged media, public relations and grassroots education blitz” on eliminating the state income tax. The “Race to Zero” campaign would include “focused outreach to tea party groups, business leaders and other civic groups to get them on board with the concept,” according to a letter sent to KPI supporters. James Franko, KPI communications coordinator, said the campaign is “an opportunity to talk about why taxes matter,” adding that “we think lower taxes matter.” KPI also is hosting a fundraising dinner Sept. 20 at the Hyatt Regency Wichita in which Gov. Sam Brownback will speak on “creating jobs through fundamental tax reform.”
