A push by some Kansas House Republicans to cut even more funding for public schools couldn’t clear the House Appropriations Committee this week — thank goodness. A proposal to cut an additional $74 million from schools failed 14-4. “I’ve never seen a proposal this late that would have such a devastating effect on the budget,” said Rep. Bill Feuerborn, D-Garnett. “It’s mind-boggling.” Another proposal by Rep. Gene Suellentrop, R-Wichita, to cut an additional $30 million — which excluded K-12 education but would have cut higher education by $14.3 million — was voted down 11-9.
When al-Qaida attacked the United States in 2001, Twitter’s launch was still five years away. But the microblogging service provided a means of instant reaction for members of the Kansas delegation to the news of Osama bin Laden’s death:
“Justice has been served. God Bless America!” — Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler
“I am deeply proud of the courageous work performed by my brethren who worked so doggedly to take down Bin Laden.” — Rep. Mike Pompeo, R-Wichita
“Our Intelligence Community and military personnel deserve our gratitude for their tireless efforts to never stop looking for bin Laden.” — Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.
“Osama bin Laden’s death is a historic success in the War on Terror. Our troops & intelligence officers worked relentlessly for this moment.” — Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan.
Donald Trump may regret his decision to attend Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He was a favorite target of teasing — and he didn’t appreciate it, scowling through most of jokes. President Obama noted: “No one is prouder to put this birth certificate to rest than The Donald. Now he can get to focusing on the issues that matter. Like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened at Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?” And comedian Seth Meyers poked fun at Trump’s possible presidential run: “Donald Trump has been saying that he will be running as a Republican, which is surprising because I just assumed he was running as a joke.” Trump responded later in character: “Seth Meyers has no talent. He fell totally flat.”
