Amid all the speculation about a 2011 government shutdown there have been recollections of how the 1995 one coincided with the close encounters of President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. On a New Yorker blog post about the “Monica effect,” Jeffrey Toobin warned that “stuff happens” during such breaks in routine. “There is a disorientation from ordinary processes that can have unpredictable effects on everyone concerned,” he wrote. The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty summed up the sentiments of many Thursday on Twitter. “Lesson from last government shutdown: All interns should be declared nonessential. Also, no pizza deliveries.”
