Reagan couldn’t be a Reaganite

As Sunday’s centennial of President Reagan’s birthday nears, an even louder chorus of conservative admirers is singing his praises. But as Jacob Heilbrunn noted, Reagan’s actual record on taxes, spending, deficits, immigration, abortion and foreign policy often doesn’t match the mythology of him as “the model of Republican, and even ‘tea party,’ virtue.” In fact, compared with the new standards of conservatism, Reagan would appear moderate. “Despite venerating Reagan, the party has moved to the right of him, suggesting that the federal government should be kneecapped and that a unilateralist, militaristic foreign policy would fulfill Reagan’s legacy,” Heilbrunn wrote. In other words, Reagan “couldn’t be counted among contemporary Reaganites.”

State chamber does major flip-flop on sales tax

Talk about a flip-flop. After condemning last year’s sales-tax increase and targeting for defeat state lawmakers who voted for it, the Kansas Chamber of Commerce now doesn’t want the sales tax repealed. Not only that, it doesn’t want it to expire in 2013, as the law dictates. Instead, it wants the higher sales-tax rate to remain in place and for lawmakers to use the extra revenue to eliminate state corporate income taxes.

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney announced the “top 10” things you don’t know about him on Tuesday’s “Late Show With David Letterman.” Among the made-up facts: “Mitt is short for Mitt-thew,” “I’m the guy in the photo that comes with your picture frame,” and “I have absolutely no idea where my birth certificate is.”
