“The threats we face today are primarily internal — not foreign tyranny or conquest, but excess of cynicism, selfishness and despair,” Gov. Sam Brownback said at his inauguration Monday. “Our threats are less obvious but should we fail, our decline is no less sure.” Brownback noted that Kansas was “born of aspiration,” and that the final word of its motto is the Latin root for “aspiration.” As our editorial today notes, with Brownback’s aspiration to be Kansas’ governor now fulfilled, it’s up to him to make the most of the job, and to inspire others to share and seek his dream of Kansas as a “state of hope.”
