Conservatives aren’t happy with tax deal, either

taxcutsPresident Obama and GOP leaders have managed to upset both conservatives and liberals with their tax deal — which may be the nature of finding the middle ground. Though the Democratic revolt over tax cuts for rich taxpayers and estates has received most of the media attention, some conservatives are also balking that the extension is only for two years and that the deal includes extended unemployment benefits, a temporary payroll-tax reduction and other benefits. Columnist Charles Krauthammer dubbed the deal “Stimulus II” and contended it is good for President Obama and bad for Republicans. Chris Chocola of Club for Growth called the plan “bad policy, bad politics, and a bad deal for the American people.”

– The new reform law is a “government takeover” of health care. — Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, and many others

$5,437 a week — not bad for a starting salary

cashThe Kansans in the U.S. House may feel pressure next year about being mostly newbies in a new GOP majority, but at least they won’t be working a grueling schedule. The 2011 calendar set by incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., will require just 123 workdays over 32 weeks, at a pay rate of $1,414 a day or $5,437 a week worked. “The goal for this Congress is to stress quality over quantity,” Cantor said in a memo to members.
