Candidates avoiding debates

huelskampState Sen. Tim Huelskamp (in photo), R-Fowler, was a no-show at Monday night’s 1st Congressional District debate hosted by KWCH, Channel 12. He reportedly opposed having Libertarian candidate Jack Warner participate in the debate. But Democratic candidate Alan Jilka contended that Huelskamp doesn’t want voters to learn about his extreme views on issues. Avoiding debates and public events has become a pattern across the country this election, particularly by Republicans, Politico.com reported. The website compared it to the old “four corners” basketball strategy of trying to run out the clock while you are in the lead. John Fund of the Wall Street Journal was particularly critical of Arizona GOP Gov. Jan Brewer’s refusal to debate again after a disastrous first debate in which she blanked out and appeared confused. “Brewer’s arrogant attitude towards explaining and defending her tenure in office isn’t unique,” Fund wrote, “but Arizonans have every reason to be disappointed.” So do voters in Kansas’ “Big First.”
