As the nation’s conservatism has surged since the 2008 election, the army of 8 million volunteers and 6,000 staffers that rallied to elect Barack Obama largely has vaporized. The renamed Organizing for America, led by former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe, is involved in 2010 efforts in some states, but hasn’t sustained the enthusiasm of 2008. “I don’t think it’s realistic that they would ever be able to replicate the unbridled enthusiasm,” Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons told Time magazine. “It’s like a first kiss: You can never experience it twice.”
