Good for Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan, for making Wichita’s aviation industry one of his priorities, if elected governor. Brownback said in a press conference this week that he would work to protect and grow aerospace companies. He also wants to build Wichita State University’s aerospace engineering program into the country’s best and wants to build upon the research and development capabilities at the National Institute for Aviation Research. These are all excellent goals, and it is encouraging that Brownback recognizes the importance of the aerospace industry — though it is unclear how he would accomplish some of the goals given the state’s budget problems and his vow to freeze state spending.
