Thumbs way down for Congress, political parties

thumbsdownNeither Congress nor the political parties, especially the GOP, fared well in a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll. Only 21 percent of those surveyed approved of the job Congress is doing. Meanwhile, 33 percent viewed the Democratic Party favorably, and 24 percent viewed the Republican Party favorably — the worst showing ever for the GOP in the NBC/WSJ poll. The tea party movement outpolled the GOP, with 30 percent of those surveyed viewing it favorably. The public is split on President Obama, with 47 percent approving of his overall job performance, and 48 percent disapproving.

GOP revives culture wars at its peril

teapartiersThe energizing theme of the tea parties and the GOP resurgence has been out-of-control government spending, which should help Republicans in November. So why are conservatives riled up about illegal immigration, same-sex marriage and mosque building? “The merits of the issues aside, if Republicans believe that the key to victory this year is to refight the culture wars, they are mistaken,” Michael Tanner of the libertarian Cato Institute wrote for National Review Online. He noted that Virginia and New Jersey elected GOP governors last year who “did not run as culture warriors. Instead they won their upset victories on issues like jobs, the economy, and a commitment to limited government. The polls are overwhelming. Those are the issues that voters care about, not whether two men in California get married. Republicans should focus on creating jobs, reducing spending, repealing Obamacare and cutting the size of government — and leave the culture wars for another day.”

Relief for west-side commuters

bigditchGood for the Wichita City Council for trying to provide some need relief for the Zoo Boulevard and I-235 interchange, which can be a bottleneck for west-side commuters. The council approved Tuesday the design of a connecting bridge at 13th Street. Though the plan for a partial interchange still needs federal and state approval, Vice Mayor Jeff Longwell hopes to break ground as early as next year.
