Some Kansas candidates share the distinction of having triumphed in elections at the state universities. Both Sen. Sam Brownback, now running for governor, and Tracey Mann, Republican running in the 1st Congressional District, were student body presidents at Kansas State University (1978-79 and 1998-99, respectively). Republican Kevin Yoder, the rural Yoder native and Overland Park state representative running in the 3rd Congressional District, was the student body president at the University of Kansas (1998-99). On the Democratic side, current state Treasurer Dennis McKinney was president of Wichita State University’s student government (1981-82).
