Maybe the Gulf oil leak is less Obama’s Katrina than the Democrats’ Wizard of Oz moment. At least that’s how Wall Street Journal columnist Daniel Henninger sees it. But “in the movie, Dorothy and her friends in Oz admit the Wizard’s limits. Not here,” he writes. “After a century of faith in the government’s omnipotence, the discipleship can’t believe this is happening.” The postwar period has found many Americans willing to let the government throw money at problems. But, he writes, “now government’s inefficiency has become indefensible and its fantastic costs, its oceanic spending, a clear and present danger.”
