Talk show host Glenn Beck begged his listeners last week to look for the words “social justice” or “economic justice” on their church Web sites. “If you find it, run as fast as you can,” he said. “Social justice and economic justice, they are code words.” Beck later held up pictures of a hammer and sickle and a swastika. “On each banner, read the words, here in America: ‘social justice,’” Beck said. No surprise, Catholic and evangelical churches and organizations are appalled by Beck’s rantings, as social justice is an important focus of their ministries — and was commanded by Jesus. “Jesus called us to care for ‘the least of these’ — social justice is central to the Gospel,” said the Rev. David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World. “No matter where you fall in the political spectrum, it is impossible for biblically literate people to deny the thousands of verses in the Bible about hunger and poverty.”
