State Rep. Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita, and others have cried foul about the idea of a statewide public smoking ban possibly exempting state-owned casinos. “We’re going to exempt ourselves because we write the law,” said Landwehr, who doesn’t support such a ban but is willing to help draft a compromise bill.
“If lawmakers exempt casinos,” wrote Topeka Capital-Journal columnist Ric Anderson, “they’d be wise to make an exception for private businesses that cater exclusively to adults, too. Anything less would suggest they’re smoking something that sure doesn’t smell like Marlboros.”
