Last week Republicans including Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., joined in a public “prayercast” calling for health reform to fail. But the idea later got personal. And when Sen. Tom Coburn (in photo), R-Okla., suggested Sunday afternoon “what the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight,” some assumed he was talking about Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., who is 92 and uses a wheelchair. Blizzard and all, though, a defiant Byrd arrived in time to cast his vote for the health care bill early Monday. Washington Post editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes saw the situation differently, portraying Coburn himself as God’s preferred target.
