Looks like Republicans had a pretty good night last night. It wasn’t a total sweep, but it was darn close. Upstate New York was an interesting result.

If I was a Democrat, I’d start worrying. It’s not that long till the midterms.

Credible politcal analysts have minimized the significance of the Gov. races, especially the NJ race. The NY 23rd District race is more telling though. The Dems took a seat from the Repubs that had been held by their party since the 1860’s. (remember the Whigs?)

A moderate Republican in a reliably Republican district (they held this seat for more than a hundred years) was challenged by a far right wing nut. Sarah Palin and ALL of con rant radio went to the mat for the far right wing nut, the moderate con dropped out and endorsed the Democrat and the cons lost.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm warned Tuesday of a possible 20 percent cut in state spending next year, a draconian step after billions in cuts since 2003 already have dented police and fire services, pushed schools toward insolvency and reduced oversight of prison inmates.

Gay marriage has now lost in all 31 states in which it has been put to a popular vote — a trend that the gay-rights movement had believed it could end in Maine.

Well, this is a surprise – well, not really”
    —–

The idea behind the $787 billion stimulus bill is that government can create jobs by spending money. For now, let’s ignore fact, history, and economic theory and assume that government spending can actually create jobs.

In that case, we should expect the government to invest relatively more money in the states that have the highest unemployment rates and less money in the states with lower unemployment rates. So let’s check the data. . . .

Yet, with a few exceptions, the data show that this is not the case. Many higher-unemployment states are getting far fewer stimulus dollars than lower-unemployment states.

Take Michigan, for instance. Michigan’s 15.2 percent unemployment rate is the highest in the country. So far, it has received $403 per person in stimulus funds. That’s above the average stimulus per person across all states ($326). However, it’s lower than the $409 per person that the state of Vermont, a state with relatively low unemployment (6.8 percent), has received so far. Michigan’s per-person take is also much lower than the $707 per person the District of Columbia received. D.C.’s unemployment rate is 9.9 percent.

Now look at the state with the lowest unemployment rate in the country: North Dakota. It’s getting $253 per person with a 4.3 percent unemployment rate. Many other states are receiving roughly the same amount of stimulus funds per person despite much higher rates of unemployment.

Which suggests that stimulus funds are being allocated without thought to the level of unemployment within states. If government spending could in fact create jobs, then the problem of unemployment could be mitigated by distributing funds to states based on their relative unemployment levels.

But that’s not being done at all. Instead, funds are being distributed randomly, as quickly as possible, among the states. That in turn suggests something else: Even the federal government doesn’t believe the myth that government spending can actually create jobs.

    http://reason.com/archives/2009/11/03/the-secret-message-of-stimulus

    ====

Then how are the funds being distributed? Hmmmm – perhaps political connections count most? Who’d a thunk it. Imagine – create a slush fund, and it acts like a slush fund.

Remember? The CBO told us we’d have a recovery in 2010 WITHOUT the stimulus. So tell me, with a straight face, the a trillion dollars of deficit spending did long term good. Go ahead. Try.

MORE BS about “saved or “created” jobs

STIMULUS WATCH: Salary raise counted as saved job
By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE and MATT APUZZO – 6 hours ago

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama’s economic recovery program saved 935 jobs at the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, an impressive success story for the stimulus plan. Trouble is, only 508 people work there.

The Georgia nonprofit’s inflated job count is among persisting errors in the government’s latest effort to measure the effect of the $787 billion stimulus plan despite White House promises last week that the new data would undergo an “extensive review” to root out errors discovered in an earlier report.

About two-thirds of the 14,506 jobs claimed to be saved under one federal office, the Administration for Children and Families at Health and Human Services, actually weren’t saved at all, according to a review of the latest data by The Associated Press. Instead, that figure includes more than 9,300 existing employees in hundreds of local agencies who received pay raises and benefits and whose jobs weren’t saved.

That type of accounting was found in an earlier AP review of stimulus jobs, which the Obama administration said was misleading because most of the government’s job-counting errors were being fixed in the new data.

The administration now acknowledges overcounting in the new numbers for the HHS program. Elizabeth Oxhorn, a spokeswoman for the White House recovery office, said the Obama administration was reviewing the Head Start data “to determine how and if it will be counted.”

But officials defended the practice of counting raises as saved jobs.

“If I give you a raise, it is going to save a portion of your job,” HHS spokesman Luis Rosero said.”

Israeli Navy Seizes Ship Allegedly Carrying 60 Tons of Missiles

JERUSALEM — Israeli commandos seized a ship Wednesday that defense officials said was carrying more than 60 tons of missiles, rockets and anti-tank weapons bound for Lebanon’s Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas.

The pre-dawn seizure in the waters near Cyprus was a rare interception of a suspected arms shipment by Israel, which has long accused Iran of arming its enemies. Israel offered no evidence to support its claim that the weapons came from Iran and were meant for Hezbollah.

As always, you’re the blind idiot. Over the past 5 years, EVERYTHING that I wrote would be happening…IS (and not because I’m “in the know”, but because I listen to people who are). You’re so delusional and self righteous that you’d never admit anything until the Obama voices told you how it is.

You can throw all of the red herring’s that you want out here. It won’t change a damned thing. Those who rule YOU as well as little paranoid me, want “global governance” with a common currency. They need to start somewhere and they are starting. A debased dollar and global taxation is a pretty good start.

I’m not trying to convince you nor any of you fuqing Obamatons about anything. I’ve been saying this stuff for the past few years in order to let those who help themselves might be able to take care of themselves.

The rest of you can fuqing rot for all I care. You ain’t special, no matter how much Obama has you thinking you are.

Who pulls wagon when all want to ride?

    Friday, October 23, 2009

    To the editor:

The money we pay in taxes is there to pay the expenses of operating the government within the bounds of the Constitution. Instead, our politicians are using it to buy votes by giving away benefits (welfare, health care, etc.) from the public trough. In doing so they appear to be caring and concerned, but the real motivation is to build their own personal power base, assure their own re-election and heighten their chances of moving to a higher office. The Obama plan supported by the Democrats (who don’t dare object because that would be political suicide) to expand the tentacles of government is to make more of us dependent on government for our existence (control over the proletariat). Where did we ever get the idea that the government had the obligation or the authority to bail out private businesses, take over the control of banks and manufacturers, and even approve the pay their executives receive?

The usurped, unconstitutional and unrestricted assumption of authority by this administration has reached proportions never experienced in this country. It runs counter to the principles and practices that made the prosperity of this country the envy of the world. Left unchecked the dictates of this government will become so burdensome and restrictive we will reach a point in which the sheer cost (and the individual freedoms we lose along the way) will be beyond our ability to pay for or reverse. When that occurs, who’s going to pull the wagon when everyone wants to ride?

    ‘V’ aims at Obamamania

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/chi-tc-tvcolumn-v-1102-1103nov03,0,7062976.story

“Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.

The news media swoons in admiration — one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: “Why don’t you show some respect?!” The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader’s origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: “Embracing change is never easy.”

So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait — did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who’s come here to eat us?

Welcome to ABC’s “V,” the most fascinating and bound to be the most controversial new show of the fall television season. Nominally a rousing sci-fi space opera about alien invaders bent on the conquest (and digestion) of all humanity, it’s also a barbed commentary on Obamamania that will infuriate the president’s supporters and delight his detractors.”

“They came, they saw, they conquered primetime.
ABC’s “V” premiere was Tuesday’s highest-rated program in the adult demo, cracking usual leader CBS’ drama-series choke-hold on the evening.
“V” was seen by 13.9 million viewers and had a 5.0 preliminary rating among adults 18-49. ”

Ha ha, even Hollywood is beginning to see through the smoke and mirrors of Obama, the worst president ever, and his criminal administration.

I seriously doubt that the remake of B grade 80’s mini series is aimed at the President.

    XXX,

Thanks for the report. While you were talking to people did you get a sense of what the basis for this fear is?

What is it, specifically, that these good people fear about our government?
    ________________________________

I got to talk to a number of people. Of course you get some of the usual boiler plate, guns (take them away, God, abortion, but they fear having the government messing with their insurance. This is an absolute failure of communication!

People are scared because they see jobs and their savings disappearing.

They see massive, crushing debt that will ruin them.

They see a government that’s out of control.

Glenn Garvin is a political writer as well as a critic (very libertarian), and I think in this case he is reading what he wants into the new V series (which, by the way, I watched as well), rather than actually communicating what is there.

Despite its flaws, I really liked the original V, particularly the original mini-series. The original was an analogy to Nazi Germany, and it was interesting in that the aliens first targeted the scientists (the people most likely to see through them and to question their story). Except for one question during the first news conference, that storyline seems to have been abandoned for this remake.

The first episode of this new series moved too fast. I think they could have taken their time with the increasing influence of the aliens (heck, the original mini-series took more time with this than the new series did). They still could have dealt with the infiltration aspect in the first episode while not rushing the other aspects of the story.

We need more Government Control of the Banks because the Banks effed-up. When Government effs-up, then who controls Government?

    - The solution for a business that is run by incompetent managers, is to let that business fail.

    - The solution for a Government taking over a business that is then run by incompetent Government managers, is to get Government out of the business of running business.

FHA Delays Yearly Fiscal Report over ‘Accuracy’ of Methodology

    By DIANA GOLOBAY

The public release of an independent actuarial study of the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) was delayed late Tuesday as the firm conducting the review completes additional tests. The supplemental tests come after FHA questioned the accuracy of the actuary’s modeling.

The audit of FHA’s fiscal year 2009 — which ended in September — was scheduled for release today in conjunction with a press conference addressing the FHA’s fiscal health and financial outlook.

A US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) spokeswoman indicated hours before the scheduled release that the report would not be completed in time, and FHA commissioner David Stevens later issued a statement on the cause of the delay.

“FHA asked the independent actuary, IFE [Integrated Financial Engineering], to run additional economic scenario testing above and beyond what was going to be included in the actuarial study to better understand a broader range of risk scenarios,” Stevens said. “Based on these results, we raised questions about the accuracy of IFE’s modeling and IFE therefore advised us that we should not treat the report as final. IFE is now running additional tests to ensure that the final report is accurate.”

Stevens added, “We will only release a report that we are confident is accurate and fully reflects the health of the FHA.”

FHA, which insures lenders against default-related losses on qualifying mortgages, is congressionally mandated to maintain a 2% capital reserve ratio.

Stevens in a mid-September statement indicated the forthcoming actuarial review would show the FHA’s reserve ratio dipping below that required level.

The show’s cast and crew denies the charges of bias. While actress Baccarin acknowledges that she had modeled her character, Visitor leader Anna, after politicians, she and series executive producer Peters were surprised by the alleged “controversy.” At a press conference at Summer TV Press Tour 2009, Peters said that the show was open to interpretation” and that “people bring subjective thoughts to it…but there is no particular agenda.”[15] Peters’ colleague, Jeffrey Bell agreed, stating that it was simply “a show about spaceships.”[14]

    TeaParty

I just got back from the TeaParty at LD. Boy, was that something! I got there about 12:15. I got to spend almost an hour wandering around talking to people before the shindig got started. I met some nice folks.

    Observations:

They’re NOT astro turf. It doesn’t get anymore grass roots than that. They were just regular people. Conservative and conservative leaning, but people just the same.

There are a he11 of a lot of people out there that are afraid of their own government. I think that says something. And what it says isn’t good.

Please don’t tear my head off if my count (estimate) is wrong, but I’d guess there were 2,000-3,000 people there. KSN will have a better estimate.

Anybody who discounts the TeaParty movement does so at their peril. These are serious people. And they’re people who vote.

If Republicans think they have any control over this movement, they may be in for a surprise. These people are mad at the WHOLE government.

    ———————————————-

That’s been my experience at tea parties also. Normal folks, conservative, mad at their Government and afraid at the same time.

I suspect there are many former Republicans and former Democrats at these events. It would be nice if the people actually voted all da bumbs out and elected some 3rd Party or Independent candidates.

That almost happened in NY’s 23rd, and Doug Hoffman nearly won in spite of having both parties attacking him and outspending him.

British deaths raise questions about Afghan police

By ELENA BECATOROS and DEB RIECHMANN (AP) – 1 hour ago

KABUL — The killing of five British troops by a rogue Afghan policeman underlines concerns about training and discipline within the ranks and possible insurgent infiltration of a police force that the U.S. hopes will be its ticket out of Afghanistan someday.

The attack caused anguish in Britain, where public support for the war has been waning. Britain is the largest contributor to NATO forces in Afghanistan after the United States, and its continued presence here is central to President Barack Obama’s strategy as he weighs dispatching tens of thousands more U.S. troops.

The five British soldiers, who had been advising Afghan policemen, were shot and killed Tuesday at a checkpoint where they were living in the volatile southern province of Helmand. Another six soldiers were wounded, as were two Afghan policemen when the soldiers returned fire, officials said.

Soldiers’ forum reveals anger and disbelief over latest Afghan deaths

Comments on Army Rumour Service show despair over killing of five British troops by ‘rogue’ Afghan policeman

    Wednesday 4 November 2009

News of the killing of five British soldiers by a “rogue” Afghan policeman did not take long to reach the messageboards of the Army Rumour Service.

Among the RIPs and condolences on the unofficial army website, there was anger and disbelief.

Another poster, Duke_of_Kaos, pointed out that it was not the first time coalition troops had been targeted with such tactics.

“As soon as they said 5 by [gunshot wound] it had to be an inside job, not the first, the US had a similar incident earlier this year and I fear it won’t be last case of side changing or infiltration,” he said.

Others took the deaths as further proof that Afghanistan was no place for British troops.

“Sad, sad news, betrayed by our friends, unloved by our people, unsupported by our government,” wrote mick_sterbs. “RIP Guys.”

Spiffy was more succinct: “Afghanistan is not worth one British life.”

I copied exactly as it was, didn’t change a thing, and linked.
I can’t help it if you are a poor product of the government schools.

Here, chew on this awhile, from Gary Bauer, but don’t choke, ha!
“New Jersey – This is the big story of the night. Obama staked his reputation on this race. Just consider this recent headline from the Associated Press: “Obama Says NJ Governor Is Key To His Own Agenda.” The article goes on to state, “A Corzine loss would be seen as a political embarrassment for the White House.”

Those were the stakes in Obama’s own words – Corzine was the key to Obama’s liberal agenda. Evidently, that agenda wasn’t the “hope and change” Garden State voters were looking for just one year ago when they voted for Obama by 15 points. Last night, they evicted Democrat Jon Corzine from the governor’s mansion. “

“If you’re a Democrat member of Congress representing a red state or conservative district, as many are today, based on yesterday’s results would you toe the liberal line and bet on Obama delivering for your reelection next year? By the way, there are rumors today – and I stress only rumors – that the healthcare juggernaut may have been slowed down by these results.”

I just scrolled through comments above because I want to watch the news and get some sleep. I did attend the “Tea Party” this PM and have some comments.

About attendance, because I attend a lot of baseball games at L-D stadium, I think I can estimate crowds. In my opinion, this crowd was about 1,500 counting people who continued to arrive as others left. I left after the first hour myself.

The so-called opposition included our own WE Blogger, CF, always a tough verbal opponent. While I don’t necessarily agree with his left wing point of view, he is a gentleman when making his arguments. In fact, I noticed him having a good natured debate with Karl Peterjohn who I supported for county commissioner. I would like to have taped that conversation.

In my opinion as stated above by others, tea party speakers, who I believe were mostly from out of town at least while I was there, don’t dare express many carved in stone opinions because they will immediately begin losing supporters.

As a general rule, most people there feel they are being oppressed by too much government and too much government spending and borrowing.

But as soon as tea partiers express positions on, for example, health care, there is division. I don’t think American public opinion has focused on what is wanted in health care. I don’t buy many of the glib power points expressed on health care.

Ditto on abortion issues … I think generally women should make the decision for themselves.

Ditto on the attempt to paint the Koch group as anti-American. I don’t agree.

I am strongly against amateur elected politicians making uninformed idiotic decisions about spending our tax dollars as though there is an unlimited source of money.

I feel unlimited borrowing by government, business and individuals is at the bottom of the failure of our society today.

So “tea baggers” need to stick to patriotic speeches and country and western music.
