Transparency in gov’t–The Cheney Deposition finally comes to light

    Bottom line: he “can’t remember” anything . . .

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/02/politics/main5491257.shtml

On 72 occasions, according to the 28-page FBI summary, Cheney equivocated to the FBI during his lengthy May 2004 interview, saying he could not be certain in his answers to questions about matters large and small in the Plame controversy.

The Cheney interview reflects a team of prosecutors and FBI agents trying to find out whether the leaks of Plame’s CIA identity were orchestrated at the highest level of the White House and carried out by, among others, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Cheney’s chief of staff.

Among the most basic questions for Cheney in the Plame probe: How did Libby find out that the wife of Bush administration war critic Joseph Wilson worked at the CIA?

Libby’s own handwritten notes suggest Libby found out from Cheney. When Libby discovered Cheney’s reference to Plame and the CIA in his notes – notes that Libby knew he would soon have to turn over to the FBI – the chief of staff went to the vice president, probably in late September or early October 2003.

Sharing the information with Cheney was in itself an unusual step at the outset of a criminal investigation in which potential White House witnesses were being ordered by their superiors not to talk to each other about the Plame matter.

“It turns out that I have a note that I had heard about” Plame’s CIA identity “from you,” Libby says he told the vice president.

And what did Cheney say in response? Fitzgerald asked Libby in front of a federal grand jury six months later.

“He didn’t say much,” Libby replied. “You know, he said something about ‘From me?’ something like that, and tilted his head, something he does commonly, and that was that.”

Cheney’s version of the conversation, as related in the FBI interview summary?

Cheney “cannot recall Scooter Libby telling him how he first heard of Valerie Wilson. It is possible Libby may have learned about Valerie Wilson’s employment from the vice president … but the vice president has no specific recollection of such a conversation.”

On another basic point, Cheney simply refused to answer.

Fitzgerald had gathered evidence that Cheney apparently persuaded President George W. Bush to hurriedly declassify portions of a prewar National Intelligence Estimate on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The declassification was followed by Libby providing the information to a New York Times reporter while simultaneously talking to reporters about Plame’s CIA identity.

As Fitzgerald pressed the issue in the FBI interview, Cheney refused to confirm any discussion with Bush, saying that he must refrain from commenting about any private or privileged conversations he may have had with the president.

It was an instance of Libby, who had testified two months earlier to a federal grand jury, being more forthcoming than Cheney.

Presidential oath of office taken by President Obama

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Presidential spokesperson (on behalf of President Obama) dialogues about the mandantory healthcare provision:

“But here would be the first time where our government would demand that people buy something that they may or may not want,” Hatch told CNSNews.com. “And, you know, if that’s the case, then we didn’t need a ‘Cash for Clunkers,’ all we had to do is have the federal government say you all got to buy new cars, no matter how tough it is on you. You know, they could require you to buy anything. And that isn’t America. That’s not freedom. That’s not constitutionally sound. Now, there may be some gimmicky way that they can do this, but I can’t think of a gimmicky way that would be constitutionally justified.”

Gibbs was asked by a reporter on Monday: “Have White House lawyers looked at this issue? Has this been examined in any way?”

Gibbs responded: “Not that I know of. I don’t think it has gotten to the point where anybody questions the legitimacy of it.”

The reporter followed up: “Well, Orrin Hatch questions the legitimacy of it.” Gibbs quipped, “Well, you should ask him.”

The reporter asked, “Do you not feel there is any concern at all about whether it is constitutional for Congress to impose a mandate?”

    “No,” Gibbs said. ”

    So it goes.

    The Obstructionist party of NO.
“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats who control a key U.S. Senate panel said they would begin debating a climate change bill on Tuesday, despite a planned boycott by minority Republicans who are demanding more study of the issue.

Senator Barbara Boxer, the California Democrat who chairs the Environment and Public Works Committee, wants to have a bill approved by her panel before an international summit on global warming convenes in Copenhagen in December.

The wrangling over when debate can start illustrated how difficult it will be to get any bill to the Senate floor and passed into law before year end, complicating President Barack Obama’s hopes that the United States will take a leading role in Copenhagen.

Saying she was attempting to address Republican concerns, Boxer told reporters Tuesday’s work session would be suspended in the afternoon so experts from the Environmental Protection Agency could come before the committee to answer technical questions — from Democrats or Republicans — about the bill.

Boxer also said she would extend a deadline for Republicans to notify her of amendments they might pursue to the bill.

“We’re not going to rush this through,” she said, adding she hoped Republicans “return to the table.”

Senator Richard Lugar, a moderate Senate Republican whose support Democrats would like to win, warned that “it would not be constructive” if Boxer pushed the climate bill through the environment panel during a Republican boycott.

A committee Democratic aide, who asked not to be identified, cited Senate rules saying that Tuesday’s committee session could occur if at least 10 of the 19 members attend. Democrats control 12 of the seats.

Republicans had hoped to stop the work session with a boycott by all seven of their members, citing a different committee rule stating at least two Republicans must be present for the panel to conduct business.

That is a state issued mandate. and as you imply. has an exemption if you are willing and able to be self insured. In addition, the car insurance mandate is to take advantage of the priviledge of driving on a government financed road.

Not even close to the same situation with healthcare. The current bill provides no such exemption, and has nothing to do with taking advantage of a government financed anything. Insteaed, it is imposed for the condition of merely being alive.

“Mr. Gore has invested a significant portion of the tens of millions of dollars he has earned since leaving government in 2001 in a broad array of environmentally friendly energy and technology business ventures, like carbon trading markets, solar cells and waterless urinals.”

He has also given away millions more to finance the nonprofit he founded, the Alliance for Climate Protection, and to another group, the Climate Project, which trains people to present the slide show that was the basis of his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”

Mr. Gore says that he is simply putting his money where his mouth is.”

“. . . The chapter paints a stark picture of the discourse on climate science and what it means for the policy debate:

On the one hand is the global scientific consensus, and on the other — given equal weight – are the crackpot theories of industry-financed deniers.”

And the Obama Administration blames the H1N1 Vaccine Shortage on the MANUFACTURERS!

I can see it now, 5 years from now, ObamaCare horror stories will become prevelent, and the Government will be blaming Doctors and Hospitals for the failure of the Democrat plan.

Shortage of Vaccine Poses Political Test for Obama

    By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
    Published: October 28, 2009
WASHINGTON — The moment a novel strain of swine flu emerged in Mexico last spring, President Obama instructed his top advisers that his administration would not be caught flat-footed in the event of a deadly pandemic. Now, despite months of planning and preparation, a vaccine shortage is threatening to undermine public confidence in government, creating a very public test of Mr. Obama’s competence.

    —-

Ms. Sebelius has said she was relying on estimates from manufacturers, who reported in July that 120 million doses of vaccine would be available by the end of this month — a figure that was later lowered to 40 million doses, and then lowered again. She said Wednesday that 23.2 million doses had become available, including 9 million in the last week alone.

The “Tea Party Express” thing is such a silliness and a futility. 70% of America could not want ANY of these 5 principles and this out of control-government-for the-corporation will pass them any way. We aren’t being represented any longer.

Sure these douchbag “republicans” can act like like are “for the people” now that they are out of power…but they increased the size of government three-fold when they did have control during Bushco’s feigned leadership.

The Ron Paul tea party’s were composed of and started by real grassroots homemade sign holding Americans.

These Glenn Beck-Sean Hannity-FoxNews scams are nothing but controlled oppostion mockeries.

Why isn’t one of those 5 principles about auditing the Fed and ending it?

    Because it’s BS.

The ONLY redeeming quality about them is that it lets America see that they aren’t alone in their anger.

It only took 3% of the colonists to defeat the crown.

“In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, brave, hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, however, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a Patriot.”-Mark Twain

After a flurry of stimulus spending, questionable projects pile up

Fraud and abuse weigh down stimulus package
Was the stimulus worth the cost?

Fraudsters made the most of homebuyer tax credits

After a flurry of stimulus spending, questionable projects pile up

White House moves to control waste and fraud

The $787 billion stimulus bill was passed in February and was promised as a job saver and economy booster. Here is where some of the money went:

    - $300,000 for a GPS-equipped helicopter to hunt for radioactive rabbit droppings at the Hanford nuclear reservation in Washington state.

    - $30 million for a spring training baseball complex for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.

    - $11 million for Microsoft to build a bridge connecting its two headquarter campuses in Redmond, Wash., which are separated by a highway.

    - $430,000 to repair a bridge in Iowa County, Wis., that carries 10 or fewer cars per day.

    - $800,000 for the John Murtha Airport in Johnstown, Pa., serving about 20 passengers per day, to build a backup runway.

    - $219,000 for Syracuse University to study the sex lives of freshmen women.

    - $2.3 million for the U.S. Forest Service to rear large numbers of arthropods, including the Asian longhorned beetle, the nun moth and the woolly adelgid.

    - $3.4 million for a 13-foot tunnel for turtles and other wildlife attempting to cross U.S. 27 in Lake Jackson, Fla.

    - $1.15 million to install a guardrail for a persistently dry lake bed in Guymon, Okla.

    - $9.38 million to renovate a century-old train depot in Lancaster County, Pa., that has not been used for three decades.

    - $2.5 million in stimulus checks sent to the deceased.

    - $6 million for a snow-making facility in Duluth, Minn.

    - $173,834 to weatherize eight pickup trucks in Madison County, Ill.

    - $20,000 for a fish sperm freezer at the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery in South Dakota.

    - $380,000 to spay and neuter pets in Wichita, Kan.

    - $300 apiece for thousands of signs at road construction sites across the country announcing that the projects are funded by stimulus money.

    - $1.5 million for a fence to block would-be jumpers from leaping off the All-American Bridge in Akron, Ohio.

    - $1 million to study the health effects of environmentally friendly public housing on 300 people in Chicago.

    - $356,000 for Indiana University to study childhood comprehension of foreign accents compared with native speech.

    - $983,952 for street beautification in Ann Arbor, Mich., including decorative lighting, trees, benches and bike paths.

    - $148,438 for Washington State University to analyze the use of marijuana in conjunction with medications like morphine.

    - $462,000 to purchase 22 concrete toilets for use in the Mark Twain National Forest in Missouri

    - $3.1 million to transform a canal barge into a floating museum that will travel the Erie Canal in New York state.

    - $1.3 million on government arts jobs in Maine, including $30,000 for basket makers, $20,000 for storytelling and $12,500 for a music festival.

    - $71,000 for a hybrid car to be used by student drivers in Colchester, Vt., as well as a plug-in hybrid for town workers decked out with a sign touting the vehicle’s energy efficiency.

    - $1 million for Portland, Ore., to replace 100 aging bike lockers and build a garage that would house 250 bicycles.

    You’re a “professional engineer”?

Tell us how long a large population can rely on glacier melt-water that “can easily be stored in reservoirs” after the glacier has completely disappeared.

    “Regular” proclaims –

“99.9 percent of AGW climate news involves predictions not science.”

That’s about as absurd a comment I’ve ever read from you, “Regular.”

99.9% percent of science is nothing but predictions. Will the Salk vaccine work better than the Sabin vaccine? Will a point.six degree course correction get to the Moon or miss it altogether? Is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate likely to blow up?

“The Snows of Kilimanjaro” are almost no more. That’s not a prediction and it’s not science, it’s a fact. The Himalayan farms, grazing lands, settlements, towns, and cities with excessive run-off. That’s not a prediction and that’s only nominally “science” (measuring the damage); it’s a fact.

And, as much as I admire “cosmo_originally’s” passion on AGW, we progressives have once again allowed CONs to gang up on what is essentially is a tangential issue. CONs bark up this particular tree and reveal they’re totally oblivious of the forest.

Fossil fuels are an ancient, filthy, depleting finite resource. Too many people who have too much of it hate Americans and Christians and Western Civilization in general just love holding our feet to the… ahem, fire.

Global Warming is a facet of a bigger challenge. It’s a fact and it’s got important considerations, but there is more at stake.

You don’t like Al Gore? Fine. I’m not fond of Jim Inhoff, either. One funds real scientists — and their predictions — and the other parrots his fossil fuel company contributors’ propaganda.

Marian MacDorman of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (email MMacDorman@CDC.gov ) has issued an apparently fraudulent report claiming that a high premature birth rate (1 of 8 births), a cause of the high infant mortality rate in the USofA, is caused by poor access to prenatal care, maternal obesity and smoking, too-early cesarean sections and induced labor and fertility treatments. The news releases of the report deliberately omit previous abortion as a repeatedly proven major risk factor for premature birth, failing to inform mothers as to how to avoid future risk of premature birth and the associated medical complications.
More than one previous abortion causes risks that virtually assure such complications in a later pregnancy being carried to term. Genocidal abortion mills in America have targeted the black race at 3 times the abortion rate, resulting in a premature birth rate and infant mortality rate 3 times or more higher, and a higher rate of medical problems in black newborns such as cerebral palsy.

And the AGW science deniers do not understand that AGW science has been debated by scientists worldwide, in scientific journals.

Actually a 32 PERCENT increase in Gas Prices Chas, not 32 Cents, since Obama took office.

And Remember, Pelosi’s promise to lower gas prices when the Dems took back Congress?

    http://www.herald-dispatch.com/opinions/x343466550

The situation fueled a press release by Rep. Nancy Pelosi: “With skyrocketing gas prices, it is clear that the American people can no longer afford the Republican rubber-stamp Congress and its failure to stand up to the Republican big oil and gas company cronies.”

She announced, “Democrats have a common-sense plan to help bring down skyrocketing gas prices by cracking down on price gouging, rolling back the billions of dollars in taxpayer subsidies, tax breaks and royalty relief given to big oil and gas companies, and increasing production of alternative fuels.”

Well, over a year after taking the Senate and the House on Jan. 4, 2007, and promising to lower oil prices, the Democrats have presided over the highest oil price increase in history. Last week, gasoline prices averaged $3.94 per gallon, $1.03 higher than when now-Speaker Pelosi made her politically motivated promise.

Just when were the Democrats planning on implementing their plan?

have been following/reading all the CBO reports in detail since January. I couldn’t figure out how
the latest House version could possibly have cut costs to keep the bill under the made-up magic 900 billion.

(CBO’s website is easy to follow. See latest reports dtd 29 and 30 October, and letter to to Rangel)

Now, the former CBO Director helps me out by explaining what I couldn’tsee in the report(s). Frontloads and backloads:

    Extract:

“Former Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Holtz-Eakin said
the House Democrats’ health care overhaul is neither durable nor
desirable because it would raise insurance premiums, ration care, and
fail to bring down the cost of health care in America.

Speaking Monday on a conference call with reporters, Holtz-Eakin said
that House Democrats had failed to draft a bill that would deliver
meaningful health care reform without breaking the budget. House
Democrats unveiled their 1,990-page health care bill last Thursday.
President Obama called it a “critical milestone.”

Holtz-Eakin, however, said: “We are going to generally raise the cost of
existing insurance to those who already have it – and that’s a majority
of Americans – and then put in place a fiscally rickety way to get
insurance to those who do not have insurance.”

Instead, the House bill employs budget “gimmicks” to hide its true cost
and make the bill appear fiscally responsible while creating another
federal entitlement program that Congress will not be able to pay for,
    he said.

“This sets up instead a large entitlement spending program that grows at
8 percent a year as far as the eye can see, and which [current] CBO
Director Doug Elmendorf said earlier this year did not bend the cost
curve,” said Holtz-Eakin. “It leaves the architects with only gimmicks
    to disguise this problem.”

Among those “gimmicks” is the front-loading of new taxes and the
delaying of spending provisions, Holtz-Eakin said, both of which give
the appearance of balance while concealing the real 10-year cost of the
bill’s expensive insurance subsidies and entitlement expansions.

“It front-loads all of the taxes and back-loads all of the spending so
as to give the appearance of balance over the 10-year window,” he
    explained.

One of the effort’s largest savings provisions, a reduction in Medicare
payments rates, is “unrealistic,” Holtz-Eakin said, because Democrats
made no substantive changes to the health care delivery system that
would allow them to cut the rates at which the government pays doctors
for providing care to seniors on Medicare.”

When Shroder and a team of researchers examined satellite imagery of the region’s glaciers dating back to 1960, they found that 87 glaciers had surged forward during that time, sliding down into lower elevations. An analysis of gravity signatures in the region also suggests the glaciers are growing in mass, and have been since at least 1980.

“How can we trust Government with our total health care, when they can’t even deliver flu vaccine when needed?”

Bush Vaccine shortage = bad (ratings drop because of all the media coverage)

    Obama Vaccine shortage = good

    ———————————
Bush administration AWOL regarding flu shot crisis, New York Times 10/22/04

    ———————————
Senator Kerry said in an interview with National Public Radio:

If you can’t get flu vaccines to Americans, how are you going to protect them against bioterrorism? If you can’t get flu vaccines to Americans, what kind of health care program are you running?

    ——————————————–

    10/20/04:
    Flu Headache
Yesterday, on the way from St. Petersburg to New Port Richey, the presidential entourage stopped at the Paradise Restaurant in the little town of Safety Harbor, where the president and his brother posed for pictures and were served coffee and baklava. While in the restaurant, a member of the press pool shouted out a question to the president: “Are you accountable for the flu vaccine shortage?”
Bush ignored the question. And reporters were hustled out of the restaurant.
    —————————————–

Richard Sisk and Helen Kennedy write in the New York Daily News:
The flu is giving President Bush a headache.

    ———————————————

Laura Meckler writes for the Associated Press:
For Bush, the issue is much like what a mayor faces when streets go unplowed after a snow storm just before an election, said Robert Blendon, a Harvard pollster who specializes in health issues. . . .
    ———————————————

Jonathan Peterson writes in the Los Angeles Times:
One analyst said the vaccine shortage could damage Bush politically. “It doesn’t take any sophistication about politics to grasp the basic point: Not enough vaccine, and it happened on the administration’s watch,” said Lawrence Jacobs, director of the 2004 Elections Project for the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
This issue has the potential for becoming the poster child for the Kerry campaign theme that President Bush has dropped the ball.

    ————————————————–

    ABC News Poll 2004

Blame, at the same time, is not currently in great supply. Twenty-seven percent of likely voters say the Bush administration deserves blame for the vaccine shortage, and fewer, 12 percent, assign it a “great deal” of blame. That blame, moreover, is largely partisan, peaking among Kerry voters, Democrats, liberals and other core Democratic groups. It’s not significantly higher among seniors.
Concern about the lack of vaccine is 10 points higher among women than men, but no higher among parents with children under 18 at home (parents of very young children are too small a subgroup to break out in this poll). Neither women, nor parents, are more apt to blame the Bush administration for the vaccine shortage.
Kerry, for his part, has directly blamed the administration for the shortage, including a radio ad that specifically mentioned elderly Americans, young children and pregnant women as being at risk.

    Hope from Iowa:

    November 3, 2009
In Iowa, Second Thoughts on Obama
    By JEFF ZELENY
WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa – Pauline McAreavy voted for President Obama. From
the moment she first saw him two years ago, she was smitten by his
speeches and sold on his promise of change. She switched parties to
support him in the Iowa caucuses, donated money and opened her home to a
    pair of young campaign workers.

But by the time she received a fund-raising letter last month from the
Democratic National Committee, a sense of disappointment had set in. She
returned the solicitation with a handwritten note, saying, “Until I see
some progress and he lives up to his promises in Iowa, we will not give
    one penny.”

    “I’m afraid I wasn’t realistic,” Ms. McAreavy, 76, a retired school
nurse, said on a recent morning on the deck of her home here in
    east-central Iowa.

“I really thought there would be immediate change,” she said. “Sometimes
the Republicans are just as bad as Democrats. But it’s politics as
usual, and that’s what I voted against.”

Virginia: This state has been a red state (pretty much like Kansas) for decades. The dem. who was running had negative charisma.

New Jersey: The incumbent Dem. governor had some corruption issues in his past and there was an independent running who, the last I saw got about 5% of the vote. The vote between the Rep. & the Dem. was pretty close the last time I saw any info; I expect that 5% was influential on the final outcome–either way.

New York: The Dem. won the congressional seat in a district which had always gone Republican since the 1860’s accordinging to one news show–I watched so many, I don’t remember which one now.
