Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the status quo is “is simply unacceptable,” calling for stronger enforcement and some legalization. Barone wrote: “Now that a combination of public indignation and high-tech ingenuity have increased government’s enforcement capacity, and while the inflow of immigrants is slowing and an outflow of illegals may be accelerating, we may have reached a point when we can put in place immigration laws with enforceable limits and that encourage an influx of the kind of immigrants we need most. Can Congress act?”

The immigration laws have went largly unenforced because business in it’s zeal to erode wages uses the immigration influx as a slae labor pool. The rich and this includes policticians use the same labor pool for thier gardeners,pool cleaners,housekeepers and nannies so don’t expect Congress to be of any help. As long as corporate America can influence the politicians with money you will see no appreciable change that will help the citizens of our great country in thier standard of living that has been erode because of this laize faire mindeset of a never ending slave labor pool in which to exploit!
Jail terms for employers who hire illegals would be a good start, or at least hefty fines. Or how about enforcing existing laws?
Enforce existing laws and the border. Develop and enforce penalties for employers hiring illegal.
Deny all benefits and entitlements to illegals.
Demand proof of citizenship from all seeking work or school. Think the illegals are significantly adding to the school funding problem….?

Hey “Cynical” it is Republicans and the business that they pander to gets the illegals here. You want to punish an effect. To solve this issue you have to address cause. That would be American business exploiting these refugees to undermine American labor.
I-9s have been the law of the land for years. Still no one has gotten serious about enforcing them. We know from experience what industries are the major violators still nothing is done by either party.
They are a major source of cheap labor for some. They are also a source of votes for somes. They are a drain on our economy and healthcare systems. They make it very hard on businesses that operate within the law and have to compete with those that don’t.
Right now neither party has a strong incentive to fix this. Just something else we need to talk to our representives about.
The fact that is that in the current economic situation, many illegal immigrants have been going home and fewer coming, just as the blog says. Word is out that there are no jobs to be had, and if you can’t find work here, the cost of living is much lower back home. I hope that Barone is right that the time is appropriate to rework laws to make border enforcement more rigorous, while at the same time not denying the economy the benefits of immigrant labor when there is a need for it.

I would say the illegal immigrant issue is a failure of the Constitutional provision to provide for a common defense. Having secure borders is part of that ‘Common Defense’ meaning.
How many Presidents and Congressional representatives are we going to send to D.C. to continue to violate the mandate of the Constitution?
Do away with term limits, make the Senate four years and the House of Representatives fours, then perhaps we can get rid of this logjam of lobbyist loving partisans out of our federal government.

Fence all 6,800 miles of border, and place armed troops troops to patrol it and help the Border Patrol arrest those who can be easily arrested and held in medium security prisons set aside for the purpose.
Restrict birth-right citizenship to those with at least one US citizen parent.
Combine E-3, H-1B and L visas into one and set the limit at 1K per year, and auction them off to the highest bidding sponsor/applicant team that can pass a proper background investigation.
There’s plenty of blame for the Reps and Dems to share, going back before INA1952, IANA1965 (Kennedy), Refugee Act of 1980, IRCA1986 (Simpson-Mazzoli), EMTALA1986, IMMACT1990, IIRIRA1996, and H-1B Visa Reform Act of 2004. Immigration has been very excessive for a long time, now, and it would take some very low limits for at least 20 years to bring back some semblance of sanity.

So blue jay, are you admitting that all business owners are republicans? If so, you really give no one any incentive to be a democrat. This country was built on businesses. Then again, I guess democrats have brought some “good” things to our society such as social security and medicare…both of which are going broke.

Actually, I suspect ol’ Sam Walton was a Democrat. He built an empire based on a “Buy American” basis. And factory jobs such as that RubberMaid plant in Winfield supported schools and teachers and fire department and road improvement in Winfield. (Or was it Wellington. I don’t keep the W-towns in south central Kansas straight sometimes).
Now since Sam died, his greedy heirs have mortgaged American retailing to the Chinese. And, I bet, they vote for the Repubic Party.

If these people who sneak in here are given “amnesty” it’ll be a slap in the face to any who have came here via legal channels, took the time to assimilate and learned the common language and learned about our country and got the citizenship the right way. It cheapens the pride that those who did it the right way feel.

Money is too tight for the little folks and too loose for the big ones. Friends of Geithner are doing great. Not so much the little people.
