Many GOP amendments aren’t very serious

hatch, orrinAs proof of how they aren’t just sitting on the sidelines and saying “no” to health care reform, GOP lawmakers point to all the amendments they have offered, and how Democratic lawmakers aren’t interested in making the bills more bipartisan. But Dana Milbank of the Washington Post reported that many of the GOP amendments are aimed at playing to the GOP base or some special-interest concern. For example, Sen. Orrin Hatch (in photo), R-Utah, offered an amendment, apparently facetiously, that would have added “transition relief for the excise tax on high-cost insurance plans for any state with a name that begins with the letter ‘U.’” Rep. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, offered an amendment that Milbank said sounded like a GOP parody: It would eliminate fees charged to private health insurance companies and make up the shortfall by reducing benefits to poor people. The amendment was defeated on a party-line vote.

Apaprently, the Democratic Party had the same problem. From the link provided:

Apparently the Democratic National Committee had a similar problem. This is typical since there are so many variations of Spanish and how things translate from one to the other.

“Boehner hasn’t met “anyone” who backs public option

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) has just more or less dared proponents of a public option to bombard his office with their expressions of support of the plan.

Boehner claimed, with a semi-straight face, that he has yet to meet a regular “American” who favors the option — despite polls showing that a majority of voters support to the idea of having the choice of a government plan.

“I’m still trying to find the first American to talk to who’s in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration” said Boehner, whose sole recent foray into a public discussion of health care reform was a tea-party-style event in Ohio a few weeks back.

“I’ve not talked to one and I get to a lot of places,” he told reporters at his weekly press availability. “I’ve not had anyone come up to me — I know I’m inviting them — and lobby for the public option.”

Well Linda just for grins and chuckles tell us what you want this ‘public option’ to do.

Do you want it to be a single payer plan that anyone can buy into?

Do you want it to be a stop gap plan only for those who can’t afford private insurance?

Do you want it to be funded by increased taxes or do you have a backup plan on how to fund it?

I really want to know. I have tried to engage the left here today in a dialogue about the Obamacare plan and no one wants to talk specifics. Just throw names and insults.

HR 3400 and many other Republican attempts to amend HR 3200 with more credible language than those referenced (second hand) above are all public record.

I know it is easier to do as the media does and pick out the worst from the crowd to report on, then imply that because they are bad examples then all examples must be equally as bad.

The sad part is all the so-called open minded liberals who eat it like candy and echo the rhetoric because they don’t take the time to research for themselves.

A truly open minded person doesn’t just accept everything they read or see and takes the time to confirm or validate what they see reported.
